Dejan

So he’s off to St. Petersburg for £11M according to The Echo. A very good servant for the club, he gave his all (Dortmund?). With Gomez seeming to cement his place, Matip too being a strong contender perhaps it was time to move on.

Speaking of Gomez, am I the only one that thinks he going backwards? His performance on Wednesday give cause for concern.

Matip is a better defender than Gomez at this moment.
He is a better reader of the game and passer from the back. He wins all defensive headers unlike Gomez.

Gomez needs more experience which he will get in a few years time.

Gomez will hopefully be back to his best by start of next season. We will need a good replacement for Lovren when he leaves. Matip has already shown by getting injured 20 minutes into the restart that he is made of glass and can’t be relied upon to stay fit.

Gomez has been poor since restart. For me the VVD/Matip partnership is the strongest but problem is Matip is made out of glass. Matip is better in the air and better on the ball but probably isn't as quick as Gomez.

Signs a new contract and then gets injured

Disagree completely. Matip is slightly better in the air due to his height but he has a 50p head. Also Gomez is a better passer. They're about even in bringing the ball out. Gomez is better defensively.

Much better in the air. Look at his goal against Arsenal. Defensively he wins most of his headers.

You are forgetting the runs he used to make from defense to attack cutting the midfield out. He is very comfy on the ball.

Gomez has had a bad 6 weeks. Hopefully he will be better beginning of next season. We have 3 top CB's and hopefully a decent 4th choice.

I'm not forgetting the runs, he's really good at it but then so is Gomez. Yes he scored a good header but he's also missed many sitters with his 50o head which also causes the ball to go to the opposition to often for my liking when he's defending. He's an excellent third choice and will get 15 games a season if he stays fit but the VVD/Gomez partnership is outstanding.

VVD gomez partnership is one of the tightest we have ever seen.

They really let themselves down since the restart but it's understandable. Matip is a great backup

I think VVD and Gomez is the first choice partnership going forward. I do feel for Matip a bit because he was in great form before injury and I think Gomez may have struggled to take his place back.

Definitely a very good backup option although it will he interesting to see if we replace Lovren or promote from the youth.

Gomez has all the potential in the world and hes had games where hes outshone VVD. Been way off it since restart but the entire teams been a bit up n down from game to game. You can let him off under the circumstances sure but overall he does need to become more consistent and keep improving as a player theres still enough he can improve on greatly. Also hes yet to complete a season without missing numerous parts of it through injury. As is Matip.

Lovren never played more than 6 games in a row did he either? We still lacking a reliable CB for VVD so Lovren will have to be replaced no doubt about that.

If Brighton or Wham had gone down it'd have been worth a cheeky cut price bid for Dunk/Diop. Maybe Ake? Never really been overly impressed with him and he seems a bit injury prone too. Not a bad player though.

Find the Gomez matip debate a tough one. I tend to swing between who I prefer depending on who is in the team as both of them tend to perform well when they get a proper run of games. How lucky we are to have that level of quality in our 2nd and 3rd choices.

That all said, I edge towards Gomez purely on his age and the fact he counts to the home grown quota.

On Lovren leaving, great servant to the club who hasn't been perfect but has actually shown himself to be a very good defender 95%of the time. Just too many mistakes for a top team. And the £11m is nic3 but as someone mentioned, the wages we clear from him is probably more important

Matips runs from defence are great. Really catches the opposition off guard, he passes it forward as well then. Gomes is starting to make similar runs but he ends up passing it sideways or back..

look running the ball forward is all nice and that but its really swings and roundabouts.

matip is by far the better defender as he can read the game way better. however hes not good in the air despite his height and he's slower so the line goes deeper.

gomez is quick and outrageously talented. he is also all over the place defensively. he gets drawn out too easy, backs off and let's shots in and in general is not that good in the air or as any sort of attacking threat.

thats harsh on both but they are getting judged against perfection.

I'd play gomez but it's all perference for where you need the high line and full backs.

I'd want fabinho in with gomez all the time.
