NHS

I’m going to risk being shot down here, but I am getting fed up of hearing about NHS workers getting freebies galore. Yes they do a great job and have my utmost respect for that, but why should they get preferential treatment when it comes to £££. They haven’t suffered financially like many of us, covid has cost my wife her job but we don’t get any consessions. And before anyone argues that they are underpaid, they signed up for it. If I joined the army or the police, I would have to be prepared to potentially go to war or face a riot.
Anyone agrees?

Then why ask how the furlough scheme has saved jobs?

Presumably you know the answer?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So as soon as furlough ends we'll be back to pre-March unemployment rates?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not one person said that though, did they? Typical ja606 - replies to a statement saying it is untrue, gets undeniable proven wrong then shifts it to a statement that no-one said in the first place.

Congratulations
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Same as I didn't say the end of furlough will throw everyone on the scrap heap.

Congratulations

The argument been made Winston is how many jobs it will save, and we won’t know until October time at least. For me, I don’t think it will have saved much. But the good thing about it is people were at least still getting an income.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well no, this started because Boris asked how it has saved jobs.

I think most people would infer from that, that either he doesn't understand how it's saved jobs or that he believes it hasn't saved any jobs.

That's my point. In many cases it's delaying the inevitable.

Something ironic about a Tory Government using taxpayers money to delay unemployment, Maggie will be spinning in her grave.

In my opinion, the furlough scheme has probably stopped unemployment from rising just a tiny bit. I feel by October we’ll be seeing at least 3m people out of a job. It’s done good for people to have some form of income coming in still for 6/7 months.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it will have done a lot more than a tiny bit mate.

Look at Winston’s business as an example, any similar business but with less solvency would have gone under without furlough. How many companies do you think there are in this country that are like that?

There’s an estimated 1,400,000 private businesses in the UK that employ people.

Furlough is estimated at £14bn per month for gods sake, I think it’s doing a little more than a tiny bit.

I think your despise of the conservative government is affecting your judgement.

No the point that Winston and I are making is in response to Boris disputing that furlough will save jobs or has already saved jobs.

It clearly will and already has so now he’s trying to change the discussion to unemployment being the same as it was pre-Covid; a point that no-one in their right mind would make.

Got nothing to do with how I view the Tories, I’ve said they have done good to guarantee millions of folk an income for a good 7 months.

What I don’t think it will do is keep the unemployment figures roughly the same pre COVID. I think we’ll still be seeing unemployment figures on an unprecedented scale by October.

Just because there will still be a huge unemployment problem does not mean that furlough hasn’t saved jobs and a lot of jobs. For some it will just be a delay, yes. But for lots it will mean their employers remaining solvent and being able to continue to employ them.

You understand that both can coexist right? IE. The unemployment rate would be a lot worse if there was no such furlough scheme put in place?

No-one in their right mind would think that unemployment figures will be roughly the same as per-Covid.

No-one has said that here, so why are you confirming the bleeding obvious?

Brexit was always going to lead to a downturn in the economy, the political rhetoric and whataboutery next year will be spectacular from both sides when you factor in the financial and social effects of Covid.
