Jan Vertonghen

Tribute on the Spurs official Facebook and Twitter for anyone interested. Various Spurs players giving their views on the great man and a few montage videos of his best Spurs moments. Forgetting the last year or so, but in his heyday one of the greatest defenders to ever grace this club. Brilliant on the ball. Brilliant in defence and a terrific professional throughout. Somehow, I feel a little downhearted about it all. Not just the fact that Jan is leaving because I feel the time is probably right now to move on, but that he didn’t win a single trophy with Spurs that bothers me more than anything. Yes the memories were great, but a player of his quality and the team we had should of produced a trophy. So disappointed that all these players are starting to leave Spurs and none of them have won anything with us. Eriksen, Jan etc. That really needs to change next season.

Youngest son’s middle name is Jan.

Gutted he’s leaving, but the timing is right.

Good luck Jan.

Ha. No. Was running out of name ideas - thought I’d sneak a Spurs player in there. Told the missus after what it was

Verts definitely in his peak probably our best ever Prem era defender along with the obvious Ledders. King is and will always be the greatest defender for Spurs in my era but he was so hampered by injuries so Jan tops it slightly I reckon. Toby in 3rd.

Not really what I was asking. I meant at the top of their game who was best, regardless of injuries etc.

Question:

At their peak, where would you rank King, Alderweireld and Vertonghen?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Verts
King
Toby
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Can you imagine them playing as a back 3 in there prime.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I've fantasied about a back five of Walker, Toby, King, Jan and Rose a lot.

Well I answered it for you. Ledders obviously. But injuries taken out, then Verts would be, but at their absolute best, then King is the daddy of them all.

As I wrote the other day, Ledley King was selected for England to play in the South Africa World Cup, even though it was known he would not be able to play in consecutive games.
He was playing for Spurs at age 18.
He suffered from a congenital bone disorder that affected his knees. Used to train in a swimming pool.

The news that he's back as a coach for our defenders is great news indeed.
We're going to need something there because Levy ain't going out to buy a clutch of new players........not with the Stadium empty as it is!
