Smalling

Loan deal done at Roma and he's coming back to Old Trafford.
He was outstanding for them this season and even became somewhat of a fan favourite at the Olympico.
He probably will have learned more in the art of defending during his one season in Italy than he had his entire career here in England
Hopefully Ole has him in his plans for next season. He certainly doesn't get bullied by strikers like Lindelof and I can certainly see him and Maguire forming a strong partnership.
Of course if we can get Koulibaly it would be great but Smalling could definitely also be very important for us next season

Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes has signed for Lille.

‪The 19-year-old rejected an offer of a new deal at Old Trafford and will immediately go out on loan to Boavista after joining the Ligue 1 side.

Bit weird to sign for another team then go out on loan. Pretty sure he could have done that here.

Could it be that the state of defending over there has got a lot worse so Smalling stands out as looking good, when really he's no better than he was at United?

I mean when you look at some of the top goal scorers and how many they've scored there in the past decade or so. Definitely seems like the defensive quality that Serie A used to be known for has dropped significantly.

Now one of your lot has piped up that reminds me. Smalling would be your best defender if you were to sign him. 20m would be a steal for you lot

Can understand it if there wasn’t a pathway to the first team at United. Lille have a history of developing young players and selling them off for big money so could be a good move.

I would have Smalling actually. Not sure if Mourinho would.

I hope he has improved while over there at Roma, for England's sake more than anything.

I’m sure Inter will be in touch over Smalling soon.

Also wonder if there has also been any dialogue with Lille regarding Gabriel.

2 birds, one stone and all that.

Gomes was out of contract so wouldn’t have much to do with us where he went.

Surely he could have signed a contract with utd and got a similar loan move
