Fairplay and sportsmanship In football ??

It seems there is none. The game we all know has become so cynical, with players prepared to stoop seriously low without blinking an eye.

Watching the Fulham keeper's antics tonight, when he actually had a fight with two Brentford players, simply to stop them returning the ball to the centre circle after their goal, was absolutely comical, not to mention downright desperate.

Hopefully, when the guy watches the match back, he might cringe with embarrassment, but I doubt it.

The last real sprtsmanship / fair play I can remember was the Di Canio incident many, many years ago, when he stopped his team's attack because an opposition defender was seriously injured.

With the constant cheating, diving, time wasting, professional fouling and literally wrestling the opposition to gain an advantage, I doubt will will ever see the likes Pele, Moore, Eusabio, real gents of the game, ever again.

Didn't care who won tonight, but Fulham have gone right down in my estimations after that joke incident.

You must be absolutely fuming at the stitch up toward Wolves this season, we came up to the top flight all innocent and cheerful and have been well and truly robbed blind by cheats, and that is just the referees.

OP

Good article Steve. Whilst I am still very passionate about Spurs, football long ago lost the plot. The diving, cheating etc just to try to gain an advantage. Added to that the chequebook clubs buying all the trophies, and you have a recipe for a very discredited sport.

The players are cheats, the officials are biased and corrupt, and the media are determined to promote their most financially beneficial clubs.

Football has very little to be proud of.

The last example of fairplay and sportsmanship in English football was carried out by Marcelo Bielsa.

Players can get away with too much. For example, If you deliberately trip up a countering player with no intention of playing the ball, it should be a red not a yellow.

The officials do not help. They are shockingly bad. Definitely the worse every in my lifetime of watching football. They get so many simple decisions wrong.

Getting a fellow professional sent off as we saw n the Cup Final is the worst thing. That should result in a 5 game ban for the one doing the play acting and should be carried into a new season if needed. Not singling Arsenal, I am sure all clubs have players who do, or would do it. Disgraceful.

Xhaka rolling around in the final of fa cup is the bigger cheating act! The waving of imaginary cards by a manager who should know better Arteta is disgraceful and no bans came from either. Funny that!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I can fully understand the desire, almost desperation of players to win, but for a professional to behave like Xhaka did in the cup final, to get a player sent off is disgraceful.

It has become such the norm now, any touch = shameless drive to the floor, screaming and rolling around and now the players have no qualms about doing this and then jumping up and jogging off clearly uninjured seconds later the foul's fouls been given. It's embarrassing and i have no idea how people can act like that and not be embarrassed or ashamed that millions are watching you act like a cheating pussssy.

It annoys me more when such players are meant to be some of the tougher players out there.....Xhaka no stranger to tough tackling and a bit of aggression acting like a little cheating bitttch when clipped by the opposition. pathetic.

I am now fan of this guy but i kinda wish players would react to the physical challenge of football in this way, rather than being like wimps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku1nL1i5CYA

They should have a vet at all games with the death to all injection, warn the players that faking could cost them very dearly!..

I think the louder they scream the more they earn, gone are the days when fully grown men kicked the crap out of each other, got up shook hands and got on with it!..

If players of today had the boots from the good old days they wouldn't have to fake it!..

Or should I say be able to to fake it?..
