Sam Luckhurst on why United need a DoF

Manchester United transfer planning shows they need a director of football:

Here’s what Sevilla DoF Monchi told the Telegraph in the interview cited by Luckhurst:

“This is my opinion – all clubs should have this position.

“What is the main function? To dedicate the time to everything that relates on a sports level. Where 60-70 per cent of the budget is allocated to the first team, if you don’t have a specialist who deals with that, it is very difficult to understand.

“I do understand there are very successful clubs – Manchester United are probably one of the top five in the world, but they do not have that specific position – but I think that clubs more and more are aware that they really need this position and also we are the connection between the technical staff, the squad, the board, we know the market, we get lots of information through the different scouts.

“So, for me, I can’t believe a club does not have this particular position. Logically, I have to believe in it because that’s what I do. But I do think it’s essential.

“There are clubs like Leeds, Liverpool and [Manchester] City, amongst others, that are working with quite a well-developed sporting management structure.

“It is difficult for us to compete with English football, but we do so by making our brand name known, which is undoubtedly associated with success.

“Maybe we can’t pay that much, but we (Sevilla) can offer a very exclusive sporting challenge, I would say almost unique. There are the numbers... 20 finals in this century, 10 titles, kings of the Europa League, we are specialists in doing more with less."

That last comment struck a chord. If Sevilla and Monchi are experts at doing more with less, present day United and Woodward must be experts at doing less with more.

That was an older time which the football world seems
to be moving on from.

And yet DofFs were prevalent in many clubs right across Europe even in them olden black and white days.

DofFs are not a new thing. Its just something United specifically, have never needed to have. Because of Fergie and Gill.

If United hadn't been lumbered with Ed for a more competent CEO and negotiator and yes, even a change of owners too, I think that the investment the Club has made on recruitment since the olden days of 2013 with LVG and Jose as manager would have been a lot more fruitful on the pitch. Who knows, LVG or Jose could still be the manager.

RBW, if you want to look at this purely through the lens of individual personalities (which is valid), just think: appointing a DoF would remove Woodward from a lot of decision making around the football side of the organisation.

I don’t care who does it but we need to do the following

Introduce a consistent footballing identity from the academy to the first team

Talent spotting - We do OK but need to be far better at spotting talent earlier and signing players before they become in demand.

Improve / clarify decision making on transfer targets and future managers - Maybe a committee made up of the manager, coach, head scout and a representative of the board to spread the responsibility and provide clarity for fans.

Introduce a deadline for incoming transfers in order to benefit new signings intergration into the squad.

Imagine I’d we told all parent clubs we were negotiating with that we insist on business being completed by kick off of the season and will walk away if they can’t agree to that. If they want to sell and The player wants the move, they will sell. What’s the alternative, hope another club comes in and matches our offer?

I’m sure there are holes in all of that but I’m interested in talking it through

I’m not sure it would remove Woodward from those decisions, but it would certainly introduce another (Hopefully more qualified) opinion

Yes it probably would.

Or if they don't want a DofF (which they seem reluctant to appoint over thier succession of managers) they (Glazers) could just remove Ed from these duties and get somebody more competent in. They should be well aware by now that Ed isn't the best out there in getting involved in running the football matters.

Depends what duties / football matters you want him removed from mate. He runs the business after all. My understanding is that the Glazers pretty much leave him to that.

It's a shame our attitude to appointing a sporting director is what it is because Ralf Rangnick was practically begging for a job at a big club on Sky Sports News last week on the Football Show and he spoke really well and I know he'd like to work in England.

I think he could potentially transform the club if he was given full control.

Milan IMO made a big mistake not hiring him when they were in negotiations earlier in the year.
