Marcus Rashford: generational talent

Discuss.

On a less flippant note than the above suggests, I shared the common dismay at our failure this summer to sign a right winger in general and Sancho in particular. I wonder if that sense of anxiety at lack of squad options is slightly relaxed with the benefit of a month's hindsight? For one thing, the strength in depth in creative and goalscoring positions does look encouraging as last season's top players work themselves into form, and the likes of Cavani and VDB give us welcome rotation options. For another, the emergence of the midfield diamond and the back-three formation suggests we might not play quite so often in a formation requiring an inside right / right winger.

Obviously there's also an element of optimism soaring after one very enjoyable night, which is just as unreliable a guide to the future as the Spurs game and the apocalyptic outbursts which followed that.

His versatility as a forward means he can get goals from any area on the pitch. The same was true of Rooney, but Rooney was always far more involved in the build up as he was such a talented playmaker.

Rooney probably suffered because of his versatility, but I think the way the game is played now means Rashford can really excel as a goal scoring forward due to it.

Stats aren’t everything, but he scored a similar amount last season to what Ronaldo did in 07 and 09. Ronaldo was a Balon d’Or candidate for scoring those kind of numbers from wide. Rashford wasn’t even nominated for player of the year.

I don’t feel too sorry for him, because if he follows this trajectory and continues to work hard at developing his game, with the raw physical and technical platforms he has to build on, their Ballon d’Or nominations will come in time.

Me neither. I was trying to point out the different functions of the wide players and how their goal scoring records are now viewed.

I don’t think Rashford will ever be as good as Rooney and Ronaldo were as footballers, but I can see him regularly scoring at a similar rate to what they did at their best for us.

I have always thought Rashers looks better and happier coming in from the right and Tony M the same from the left.

On Rashers. Technically I don’t think he will get anywhere near Rooney but as has been said he could still overhaul his goal tally.

No, I don’t think he’ll ever be as good a footballer as Rooney or as prolific as Ronny, but those are some facking high targets to set the lad.

What I think he is capable of doing is returning 20-25 league goals per season from wide left and/or up top as well as assisting his teammates, which if delivered on a consistent basis is invaluable.

From the right, I’m not sure at all. The diagonal and horizontal runs cutting in to shoot *and* playing in others with his right foot are a huge part of his game, and that disappears working from the right. I think we’d see his numbers drop off pretty drastically, even if it did help those playing through the middle and off the left.

I think he can score goals from the right as well. I actually think Rashford’s best finishing comes from the right hand side of the goal, going across the keeper. He seems to have a real knack for that kind of finish. And is pretty good at breaking through between the cb and lb, whether with or without the ball.

He’s shown his best through the middle and on the left, though. So I imagine that’s where he’ll play the majority of his football. But I wouldn’t mind seeing on the right in some games because of his improvements. He’s a better player now than when we saw him on the right more often before.

Rashford is grate. He unites a fan base. Whether you’re Ole in or Ole out or Ole in between, the guy is magic.

Wouldn’t say that at all. He completely divided the fanbase earlier in the season
