He should have been Scotland manager but had fallen out with the SFA.

Met Jim McLean in his office prior to a game and he presented me with a club tie which I still have to this day. That director's box is an odd place to watch a match stuck in the corner. Also had a very pleasant round of golf on another occasion when his demeanor was the polar opposite of his public persona. Like him or loathe him he did a tremendous amount for Scottish football.

Thought about writing something here throughout today but really didn't know what to say. Deeply saddened by the news and I don't think any of us can really put into words how important he was to our club and to our game in general.

He might have been a hard man to love but he was loved nonetheless by every Arab.

I was lucky enough to see him as manager from 89, when I started getting into football, through to the last game against Aberdeen which we lost.

I didn't witness the league cup wins or the league in 83. Never saw the Barcelona victories in 87. However what I did see were the great youngsters, supported by first teamers coming back from injury and first team players on the fringes in the reserves.

This was the start for me. Going to Tannadice to see the reserves who on occasion had trialists playing for them. Seeing the reserves which included Welsh, Gray, Cleland, Bollan, McLaren, McKinlay, O'Neil, O'Neill, Preston, Ferguson & Connolly. These games were sometimes played on Saturday afternoons when the corresponding first team fixture was played away.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed these games as the players knew if they put in a good performance, they would be named in the first team squad and put in the team. Unlike nowadays when it is so predictable and the promising youngsters are all scattered out on loan.

These games were entertaining and you would see more goals in them in one half than you can see in four first team games these days.

The crowds at these games were normally anything from five hundred to a couple of thousand. One I remember was early in the season when we had this Uruguayan centre-half playing for us. Man-of-the-match performance. He had a stormer, the crowd were cheering every move. He was to be signed but unfortunately passport trouble ruled him out, never heard anymore about Edinson Machin.

Anyway what Andy McLaren says about his wee brother while on trial with United is funny. Crashing a digger into Tannadice put paid to that, McLean would have been going mental. When Siggi Jonsson went on the lash and got lifted outside Buddies/Atlantic, who did he ask the police to get him out..... Jim McLean. Every time McLaren saw Siggi after that he couldn't help but lol.

Walking along Brook Street this big black car mounted the pavement and nearly knocked me down. I was going to give the driver a bollocking, however as it was Jim McLean, better not.

So under Jim McLean, I learned under him Dundee United were going to go for a positive result no matter the opposition. I am so glad I got to witness this. These days it is anything but that.

RIP Jim McLean.
