Being a fan

It's further to the article below that created lots of comment. I don't think there is a wrong way or right way to follow the team, so this is just a personal observation.
My watching them follow a trajectory thus/
1952 - 1960 Home games taken by neighbour
1961 - 1965 Home games and some away games, alone or with people I met on the day.
1966 - 1980 ish season ticket holder, all home games, most away games with mates Mick and Ray
1980 - 1990 Most home games, very few awy
1991 - 2010 Some home games, none away
2010- now Just watch on tablet.

Now it's all been good, but the cream was with Mick and Ray,
which set off well but we gradually got poor after Sir Matt, but here's the thing, I enjoyed it just as much.

Of course we wanted success, to win things, but even though we didn't it was great. The laughs, singing, bellowing, watching great players (mostly on the other side!) but we had Hill and Coppell, Pancho Pearson, Jimmy Greenhough,
6'2 Eyes of blue, big Jom Holden is looking for you.

We got relegated, but what a season we had in the second division, plus seeing grounds we hadn't seen before.
As I say I have enjoyed the ride, but that was the best.

So for the club trophies may be important, also for some fans, but not for all. Why do I care if United are big, have the best income etc. I only care that my Saturdays are fun, exciting, funny, sometimes miserable ( rain or fog) a great hobby, talking points, a bevy and some banter if I wasn't driving.

I still enjoy it now, I can't say just as much as I loved going? but it's still good, and ja606 lets me get some good conversation, and a laugh, we have some funny guys on here.

So that's it really, there is more than one way to be a fan, not a wrong or right way.

How many years has it been now, where you just follow me around and make comments about me wherever possible, despite no interaction from my side?

Jesus wept, you'd think I'd slept with your wife the way you go on.

Get a life mate, you are facking boring as anything.

I don't know. Ray got a job and he didn't go as often, he changed a little, became more serious. Less fun for me and Mick, but I think much better for his family. Then he got a company car, he gave up his season ticket, so we lost touch. I would guess he's done alright for himself, I remember he went to night school for quite a while, so I do hope he's okay.
Mick, again I don't know. They were both poor, but Ray decided not to be. If you remember the Likely Lads Ray was Bob, Mick was Terry.
I've said before how funny he was, not witty, but funny. He never had any money, I drove him, bought his drink, sometimes his baccy, even his ticket. Now I'm no Saint, I did it for me as much as him, I liked being with him at matches, he was fun. After I gave up my season ticket I never saw him again.
I can't imagine he had a long and happy life, but I really do hope I'm wrong.
I've had a lot of luck in my live (less recently) but he had none. Cheers Mick if your still with us mate.

I'm always interested in all these stories you hear about people who met their partners through football, support different teams to their wives etc.

When I was at school I found out a girl I quite fancied was a mad United supporter, and I plucked up courage to ask her if she fancied going to a game. I went all billy big fish and bought tickets for K Stand. It was ace, won 4-0 and got a hug after every goal. I was 'politely' informed on Monday by some of the hard cases that it'd be in my best interest if I didn't do that again as she was spoken for.

I've never had a partner since who didn't loathe football and treat it as a stain on our relationship

I met Mrs DC because I didn't go to a game.

I had tickets for the League Cup Final in 2006 in Cardiff but couldn't go for some reason. Went out on the Saturday and met her and been together since. I often wonder how different my life would have been had I gone to the match.

Lovely story, DC, funny the way things turn out... my favourite memory of a league cup final was at the old wembley against forest. They used to have massive flags of all 92 clubs hanging above the concourse, and city's was hanging behind the United end... no idea how the lad got up there, but you can guess the rest.

It's not about trophies for me either, it's more about the journey to try and be the best that we can be with the resources that we have. That is my mindset towards everything in life. I am earning less that minimum wage but if you offered me 100m winning lotto ticket I would refuse it because there is no value in achieving things without earning them. The struggles, the memories, the overcoming. That said, there is no reward for righteous suffering, we should always try to do better and be the best version of ourselves. That's what made Sir Alex great and that version of Manchester United is the only one I've personally experienced and these are the values I would like us to uphold. The most important thing for me is the style of play because although trophies would be nice, I still have to watch the games and I want to be entertained by what I see, otherwise what's the point? I may as well not watch the games a just check the results every week.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your perspective. We don't always agree but I have respect for you as a fellow fan and a veteran poster on this board.

Sorry but that is utter bollox. Something that is very easy to write when it is pure fantasy, but something that would never happen in reality.

I don't expect you to understand. I used to play the lottery, as soon as I started my own business I stopped. It's more fun killing what you eat and growing your money based off your own skills.
