Check out trucknet, the truckers round table

See if any hiring is going on.

DPD are massively expanding and so are UPS. Basically those are your best bets in this economy with increase of e-commerce

If you’re struggling to find work with a specific company, join an agency. You’ll get to drive different vehicles, and as long as you’re not incompetent and you have a good attitude, you’re guaranteed to be offered a job at one of the places you temp at.

What kind of vehicle are you licensed to drive?

Probably so, but usually the agencies have like a 3 month rule where they are paid for 3 months of fees if they take a driver on permanently within 6 months of driving, which can make one think twice about the investment per se.

Which area are you looking to be based out of OP ?

I think it depends on the relationship between the agency and employer. That rule is correct, but from what I’ve seen they often waive it or come to an agreement, in order to maintain relations.

I used to do a lot of agency when I was home from my overseas work, and although I wasn’t looking for permanent work used to get offered jobs all the time. I think from an employers point of view it’s far better than an interview when it comes to finding the right person for the job, and long term could even be worth paying extra fees to the agency.

Just generally there has been a drop in trade, so a few drivers have been asked to take holiday or on furlough.

Some large shippers haven’t been sending much into the U.K. as they would normally because of Brexit.

Quick example is the agent to move some high end kitchen mixers. Comes in to them in Belgium from where ever they are produced, they work it to make it U.K. spec then send in to places like John Lewis, DGSI etc.

Due to new VAT rules, the discounting mechanism they used to have for x amount of units, needs to be readjusted. They haven’t done that yet so haven’t shipped anything and won’t until Feb.

Also one other thing to consider is that due to export doc rules with general waiting about and Kent Access Permit stuff, European hauliers will rather take a U.K. domestic load, and then ship out empty.

Previously European hauliers didn’t prefer to do U.K. domestic work. But now there will be a larger move toward it.
Which will also hit the U.K. hauliers.

I was behind an Ocado van yesterday that had a sticker on it advertising for drivers.

Maybe worth checking their website out.

What part of the UK are you looking for OP?

LinkedIn is worth a look. Identify companies you want to work for and get in touch with senior people in their business.

They will invariably give you a contact and when you email that contact, say that senior person has put you in touch... helps get a response.

15 years ago I was a driver for Tiger Woods in St Andrews. Had to quit after I started getting severe pain in my head. I had a fairway to go before I made a career out of it but was good experience.
