Well, obviously they count, but if you’re gloating about a players goal tally but over 50% of them are penalties it’s a fairly relevant bit of context. He’s still been a great signing though, regardless.

Nobody is saying he's not great, just that a fair chunk of his goals come from pens, which can't simply be dismissed as being the same as any other goal. They are the easiest way for a player to score on a pitch.

generally i agree, and we do seem to be in an age when the number of penalties being awarded - to all teams, not just united, you cheeky sausage - is going up.

Even if you did reduce the number of penalties to a more habitual amount, say 3 for each season, those stats would still be quite remarkable for a player in his position, more so one so recently landed in the league at a team that was struggling quite badly before he arrived.

So when we look at Ronaldo’s recent record breaking goal tally we need to be reminded that he scored a lot of goals that don’t really count as normal goals? How about free kicks, are they considered more of a goal the further away from the goal they’re scored?

When they give out the top scorer awards do they have another award for the player who scored the most minus penalties?

Sporting are in great shape, Hafi.

They picked up a young lad called Pedro Gonçalves from Famalicão in the summer. He’s slotted right into the hole that Bruno left and has been phenomenally productive. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if we saw him in the PL next season. Looks a great little player.
