Clearly Martinez has not been perfect this season but he has been bl**dy good and Jamie Carragher has picked him as goalkeeper of the season.
Aston Villa look a much better team with Martinez in it as did Arsenal when he was here, he has a commanding presence giving confidence to his defence and his ability on crosses just highlights Leno’s terrible weakness in that area.
The rumours are that Bernd Leno is going to be sold and the head goalkeeping coach Woodman is out too - all good decisions in my opinion if true.
I don’t know if Woodman or Arteta’’s new goalkeeping coach Pavon was responsible for selling Martinez instead of Leno but whoever made it can’t find his @rse with both hands.
Still, that doesn’t excuse Arteta, at the time it looked like a catastrophic error and if Leno is now going then it just highlights that. This error is the one that makes me doubt Arteta’s judgement the most because frankly it was an extraordinarily bad decision and certainly a few months ago he was STILL standing fully behind it. 😑

Number of goals conceded or saves made in a given season is not usually a good indicator of a goalkeeper's performance. More often than not you find the goalkeepers playing for clubs at the bottom of the league nearing the top of that list.

Exactly this. Even the save ratios are misleading because sometimes the top keepers only face three or four shots in a match. Mendy's stop ratio must have suffered badly as a result of that one game against WBA. But save ratio is probably the best marker to show how a keeper is doing. I expect Mendy to be 2nd or 3rd to Ederson and Martinez - still a great achievement when you look at how poor Chelsea were under Frank, missing the first 5 or 6 games and a new club and a new league. As I say, I was dubious but I think he is as much of a steal as Kepa was daylight robbery!

That comes down to his footwork and kicking ability above anything else. His shot stopping is good, he has a big frame so is naturally difficult to beat but in the games I have seen England play with him in goal looking to build from the back, he has looked suspicious and has made a few errors or given the ball away where other goalkeepers, like Pickford, possibly wouldn't have done.
I do also think a team like England, who want to dominate the ball, will want a goalkeeper with a strong kicking or passing ability, I dare say over actual shot stopping ability. As you have mentioned in your comment above, goalkeepers at top clubs don't tend to make that many saves per game anyway, so it can be more beneficial to have somebody who can start attacks from the back and not relinquish possession often rather than have a world class shot stopper. Ideally, you'd want both, hence why the likes of Alisson, Ederson, Ter Stegen, Neuer etc have been at the best clubs in the world for various seasons.

One of the things not fully taken into account in shots:saves is the number of times a goalkeeper comes out and takes out the danger by catching or even punching the ball. A goalkeeper like Leno who cannot effectively come for crosses may make what looks like a great save (or not) when another goalkeeper like Martinez would just have come out and caught the freaking ball !

Been saying since Emi was sold, was an awful decision and he could have been the start of a spine because he really commanded his area and instilled confidence in the defence.

I think that both were pretty much on a par with shot saving with perhaps Leno a touch better , but Emi's dominance of his area on crosses etc was miles better than Leno which took a lot of pressure off the defenders and also gave them confidence. The argument that Emi was let go because Leno was paid too much to be second string just reinforces the mess we've been in with players being paid above their worth.
