Extra time needs a big update

Does anyone else think that extra time needs to be overhauled ? Watching the Euros it was evident that the majority of games that go into extra time end up in penalty shootouts which means that in it's current format extra time clearly isn't doing what it's meant to.

So what's the solution? Well there are surely many alternatives. How about at the start of extra time teams have to field 7 or 8 outfield players. If that doesn't result in a goal then for the second half of extra time you reduce it to 3 or 4 outfield players. After which you'd surely get a goal scored as teams wouldn't be able to sit back and park 9 or 10 players in front of goal. Also would make for some fascinating managerial decisions seeing which players are kept on and how they're deployed in what positions etc.

I'm not saying that's the answer but I'm just producing an alternative to what currently is a very stale setup that more often than not only leads to penalties anyway.

Id switch it up a bit. Have 6 v 6 for 10 mins each way. Open the game up a bit with way more space. First goal wins.

What about you keep playing but every minute a player from each team has to leave. Would be interesting what order managers take them off!!

What about taking the penalties at the start of a match. That way, loser has to win the match. Fairer than losing on pens after a match.

This is a good idea. I’ve not fully thought it through, but it would take the stress out of the penalties somewhat, knowing it’s not the last kick of the game

Just go straight to penalties in my opinion if you had to change it, but I wouldn't. Penalties is a horrible way to lose, but you need top decide the game somehow I suppose.

It's only like when teams "settle for extra time" when it's 1-1 or 0-0 after 85/85 minutes and it's an even game. When extra time/penalties is involved, it's not uncommon to see two evenly matched teams just settle for extra time and potentially penalties. It's the situation that creates that phase of the game.

Just go straight to pens?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Or scrap pens and change extra time to golden goal. Decision to just go for it and risk tiring or wait for other team to tire and then go for it - could be interesting!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Golden goal was already tried. According to FIFA it made teams sit back and defend even more for fear of conceding the golden goal.

I do think Golden goal idea has legs though. But not in a format where you have 11v11 in extra time. It would work in the format I suggested in the OP.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was tried but was there still the fall back of pens at the end? If you remove that one team HAS to score or they play till they are so knackered a goal is inevitable!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone wants to see pens at the end. The 30 mins become irrelevant and if someone scores you are like damn.

Just playing extra time golden goal will be like a hour long sparring with no punches.

As a child I remember drawn knock games in 5 aside tournaments being decided by the number of corners each team had got during the match.

The logic being that more often than not the team that attacked the most won the game.

You'd end up with the problem of the team that won the shootout effectively playing like they're 1-0 up. Backs against the wall stuff for the last half hour knowing they win if it's a draw

Also who wants to see a penalty shootout at the start of a game ? Would just be weird.

I don't want to see pens personally. As a last resort it's a good option but we shouldn't see as many penalty shootouts as we get in the modern game. I lost count of the amount of pen shootouts there were in the Euros. Far too many.

Extra time in it's current format is a waste of time as teams more often than not prefer to sit back and gamble on pens. Thus making extra time a fairly pointless excercise as it's basically just a time buffer between the 90 minutes match and the shootout.

Teams could be forced to make say 5 substitutions at the start of extra time, thus weakening each lineup and their defensive cohesion.
