Gerrard to Newcastle

With the bone sawers buying the Magpies and Stevie G being highly touted to ditch his first job for a job in his native land.

Is he really any better than Steve Bruce?
Would he be a great loss?
Who replaces him?
What players from Rangers does he take with him?

I think Gerrard has done a decent job steadying the ship at Ibrox, albeit only winning one major trophy during his tenure.
If Rangers fans are to be honest with themselves, he ain't all that and he only won that singular honour because he didn't have any challenge.
Rangers have had far superior managers before and no doubt will again.

Thoughts?

Put it this way - last season there was a 38 point swing.

That is a massive achievement regardless of Covid, the lack of crowds and all the other guff excuses being rolled out.

where has this thread went ?
Are we saying Rangers winning last year was the unthinkable ??

Rangers actually should have won it the year before , the gap had been well and truly bridged and that was clear for everyone to see - and btw credit goes to Gerrard and his staff for that . Lets not forget that while were rolling it out

I dont think celtics demise would have happened under Rodgers ...all conjecture i know but thats my thoughts , so our shift in management was a factor that worked against us and helped Rangers -

AS they say , ive never known an unlucky winner

i dont think Gerrard will be a serious contender for this Newcastle job . I hope he stays at Ibrox and Ange gets to lock horns with him

Celtic were overwhelming favourites to win the league last season.

It was undoubtedly a terrific achievement for Rangers to win it. To win it by 25 points was frankly ridiculous.

Sure we would have liked to have won more than the league under SG so far. But he clearly improved the team year on year. Performances in Europe show that. It is far far harder to win your Europa League group containing teams like Benfica than it is to win the League cup so a sense of perspective is required when it comes to slating his trophy count.

Celtic fans obsession with the shiny shiny is one fact that ultimately contributed to their undoing IMO. Rather than take medium to long term view re coaching and developing their squad they seemed quite happy to sit back and enjoy their bulging trophy cabinet. There was a complacency and arrogance about how celtic approached last season.

.....Rangers hadnt won anything under SG. Hes a dud and little threat to this comfortable Celtic dominance....etc etc

I love it when Celtic fans talk down SG achievements. Its that level of arrogance amongst your support that lead to sharkgate IMO.

We were on our knees as a football team when SG arrived and he very quickly made a massive impact.

Gerrard is not perfect by any means but he has done an excellent job over the piece. The club has transformed behind the scenes thanks to SG.

He absolutely should be winning at least one cup in addition to the league this season. Time will tell if can deliver.

We have had two transfer windows of bargain basement signings so its a case out of getting the performances out the players we now have. Thats a big test of Gerrard and his teams coaching and management.

Hibs and Hearts have both made great starts to the season and in all honesty look more of a threat to us than celtic right now. But celtic will improve and they will continue to build the squad.

Big Ange might come good but so far he is struggling to scrape pass marks IMO. The lack of his own staff, the downbeat interviews, the insistence on taking risks at the back are all little red flags.

I deffo expect celtic to pick up second half of the season but hopefully it is too late by then

Not read the thread but NU will not be going for too managers initially. Gonna take years to buy talent, develop the infrastructure, get mid table then top 4 then win anything.

Too managers won’t take the job until they find out if the new guys are hire and fire like Roman or willing to wait. In the meantime any cvnt will do so likely Gerrard or Mourinho.

The top guys did work for hire and fire Roman.

I agree that will likely be their approach but they can get anyone they want.

They can’t bring in Mbappe, Pogba and Haaland without breaking ffp. It is going to have to build up over time. You probably want to be the manager in 10 years time.

I suspect we’re he asked he would go

I strongly suspect he won’t be asked

They will want an instant hit and big name straight away
Conte perhaps

Poisoned chalice, but it comes with a right few quid so someone on the merry go round will take it

He won’t be asked.

There really isn’t an issue. The problem in his future will be how does he progress from a huge club like Rangers when the English leagues will scoff at the single serious trophy win.

Quite a quandary
