Professional Management

Afternoon all

I was having a debate with some folks in the office about how a lot of the time, to make it big in nearly all professions, there is a huge slice of 'who you know' rather than what you know

We compared it to professional football and how aside from a couple of anomaly's such as Jose Mourinho or Sir Alex Ferguson, the majority of the time, to become a professional manager or head coach in a football club, you really need to have some form of professional playing history under your belt

I know a few on this site having some coaching badges and coach kids football at the weekends but I wanted to know how expensive, realistic and probable a career in professional football management is

I will be 33 years old in January and always think I've missed the boat for getting into football in some capacity, but I would be interested to know the thoughts of others on here

Every job I've had has been rife with Nepotism, and a lot of the people who benefit from it are facking useless. I have worked with degree educated idiots who have zero common sense and zero work ethic. I have also had managers who can barely write a legible sentence and have zero management skills. This is the state of the country, people given opportunities for all the wrong reasons.

There is an old cliché that sums this up - People are promoted to their level of incompetence.

It quite simply means people keep getting promoted until they reach a level that they cant perform at and it means they stay there. Thats why most "career" managers are poor at their job.

agree.

theres a level above their leave of competence that you have the be really sure you can do the job or you'll be out on your ear.

when i hired on ans a young lad there was a old guy, a beardy elbow patch type who was a team lead and he was basically useless so probably got promoted to there before i got into the work force. He used to rant about some lad who "put his name on the report" and got a big job off his efforts.

about 5 years after he got a senior job and lasted all of 6 months and got fired in a reshuffle. If he stayed as a team lead he could have been there still.

You simply have to be able to produce short term results against metrics after a certain level as excuses dont cut it. when i say short term i mean it. 2 years level, get in do something, move on. Leave the disaster for someone else.

I like that. Very true as well.

I think the current stat of British and American politics shows this premise to be false. So many are clearly breaking through the glass ceiling that their level of incompetence should limit them to.

Also, these days, if you are a white British male over the age of 40 and looking for a job, you will often find yourself at the bottom of the pile of applicants.

Unless of course, you have a fairly unique profession or skillset, then you will be in demand. But those looking for jobs in less specialized sectors will be up against it.

With the current thirst for diversity and need to fill roles for tokenistic reasons, you are more likely to be offered employment if you are black, female or younger.

I have seen it happen, they employ people for the wrong reasons, they can not do the job, and are constantly on the phone asking for help. All when more competent and qualified candidates were cast aside.

The "who you know" argument has always been a losers argument - unless someone is born into (established) money. Not least because the range of "who you know" is largely dependent on "what you know".

Totally, I have had 5 times I was told I was the best person for the job but it wasnt given to me so it could be given to a woman/ethnic minority/LGBQ+ (all one at least 1 occasion. In the same company it came out that women were asking for pay rises and when turned down were saying its because they were women so ended up getting up to 10% increases and men across the board were being told there was no money for pay rises and being laughed at for trying to demand them. I no longer work there.

Theres also the age thing.

People want to fast promote graduates and people with few skills before they really learn as it helps retain.

You end up never really growing into a skill. Our company recommends 5 years in role for technical.skills.like r&d etc but they rotate through instantly.

I've personally seen 5 jobs handed to kids for.nothing more than predetermined plant manager image so he could talk outside to more senior people about his development of talent.

I saw one girl from scotland who never did a thing and I mean nothing come in, she wouldn't even raise an order as a graduate engineer for parts and she was given a leadership role. I had many a employ ask me what did she actually do and people who were.meant to directly report to her say she never even introduced herself to them.

As I said the lad who got a senior product development role was given the job prior to interviews

And the lad who kissed up to plant manager was given a senior project role in which he did nothing and ran no projects until he left for a higher level role in our london office.

As a result nobody would apply for any roles at all internally as they just said no enough.

They ended up having to wait 9months for a lad who needed a visa come in who was actually a higher management level to do work and he got a total shock of his life walking in and got the hump and went out sick.

Just waiting for that plant manager to get the sack and all his young staff to leave now. It's coming soon.

I mange a boys U12's and assist with a girls U12's team. My skin has become extremely thick since doing this. When it comes to managing at a good level, you need to know your stuff, even if you do know someone, otherwise you'll been seen through by the players, fans and most importantly, the directors/owners.
Even 12 year olds will challenge you.
