Bruno Guimaraes

Apparently Newcastle are getting him for 35m.
A player who would fill that massive hole in our sh11te midfield and who we have been linked with...gone. And gone sue to our board, Edu and Arteta being increasingly stupid and going for players who are not attainable (Vlahovic and Arthur).

Madness.

Lyon denying it. Make of it what you will...

Too many reliable people have reported it for it not to be true.

Its a false narrative though. Its not Arthur vs Bruno. It was Arthur on loan.

Question is he better than Xhaka? Yes.

How much better and will make an immediate impact? Don't know!

Is he better than Tielemans? Nope.

So do we wait till the summer and get someone better for a long term replacement for Xhaka or do we try to get a better CM, Tielemans or someone else who is better than Bruno!

He's miles better than Tielemans. Offers more defensively and is far more robust / fitter than Tielemans, who is good going forward but a car crash defensively.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe but if you pair him with Partey, Tielemans progressive passing is more important to us.

Bruno is only tested in the French league. And Pepe's performance in the premier league compared to France is plenty of evidence of the step up you have to make playing here.

If we did, I'm sure we'd have got him.

I think it is easier to transfer a defensive mindset from league to league in opposed to an attacking one. Having said that, I dont think we have gotten the best out of Pepe at all. He is frustrating but of all our forwards, he is the most likely to conjure up an assist or a goal out of nothing.

I lso don't think Partey is the partner we want for Tielemans. Partey is NOT a DM. He is very much a box to box and as you can see, Xhaka sits deeper than Partey. In that case, we very much need an upgrade to xhaka defensively to free up Partey to help the front 4 more. Tielemans would mean we severely limit Parteys influence nd natural game

Listening to Tim Vickery on the radio today who was talking about Bruno Guimaraes, although mentioning his many strengths, he said one of his weaknesses is playing under pressure against teams with a high press. Mentioned two high profile games where he was taken off against City and Bayern because he was struggling with the intensity.

Might give an indication as to why we might not be in for him. I would take him no doubt, technically he’s a very good player.

Why would we need him when we can have Jack Wilshere

At the moment Xhaka covers the left and Partey on the right. I don't see Xhaka covering behind Partey. I actually agree that Partey is box to box. Though some think he isn't. He carries the ball forward whereas Xhaka passes. So that provides the balance. At the moment Tomi comes into Mf to allow Partey to cover Xhaka as he covers behind Tierney.

I actually want Arteta to encourage Partey to go into the box more but whatever reason he does not. Whether its instruction or hesitation. And thats were we lose balance. I think we need that passing player to add that extra man in attacking midfield to create space for Odegaard. We actually don't attack at all in CM. Its always from wide and teams are happy for that for crosses to Laca. Easy to defend.

I know we are looking for a tall striker but frankly the tactic is so simplistic and 1980s/90s.
