Iniesta, messi, fati, Iniesta, xavi all came through barca b team

Vinicus Jnr, carvajal, vasquez, odegaard, casimeiro all came through reals casilla team.

Only picking these two up cos these need to research and are of the top of my head if I looked into it i would find a lot more.

Not saying the b teams were the reason hey became what they are, but Pep was adamant of its importance to his barca players.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You're comparing apples and pears.

Look at a similar sized league like Croatia then tell me about all the big name players who featured in their B teams.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
as i said I would need to do research off the top of my head I couldnt answer it and pretty sure you couldnt either so your using it in defence through ignorance rather knowledge. But Croat teams have only been running B teams recently I think .... Zagreb for eg 2017 so to be able to round of a number of established stars as you want a bit limited in sample size.

I gave examples of teams with B teams producing players good enough to play for the senior variants. I used those examples cos it was ones that I could easily recite. Im sure I could go Bayern, Ajax, Dortmund, Real who have had their b teams in the leagues for far longer.

Bigger teams in their own smaller leagues like us and the croats are looking to do what the other bigger teams in their leagues have done and claimed it to be successful.

I think Barca have had the b team in leagues since about 1990 and i thikn were one of the first to do so? and they have since prob been the best producers of young talent in world football.

I'm not sure I know what the solution is, but I strongly supported a proper reserve league.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

so is there evidence that a 'proper' reserve league will improve the development of young players?

What is it about a proper reserve league that you think would be a benefit?

I am not being critical here. I played reserve team football many many moons ago and I loved going from the youth team to having experienced players playing next to me talking me through games at CB.

I was still not up to it though and it didnt help me break into the first team

But I do think there are reasons why the old reserve league format went out the window and I think it will be difficult to get away from those.

Barca can utilise a B team because they have world class players blocking their use, and they can play against very good teams in the second tier of Spanish football.

If your kids were good enough they'd be in your first team.

As for Croatia, I'm sure Zagreb II were formed in 2015 and most of their best young players went straight into the first team and bypassed the B team - which is exactly what would happen here.

I do believe playing against men rather than boys will help young players, and perhaps more importantly playing alongside experienced pros will bring them on.

Not all teams want a reserve league, so don’t see how that can happen.

When did Zagreb b team even join the pro leagues? The fact they have B teams is an argument in favour of them here.

Netherlands moved to having b teams in the leagues only 10 years ago or so. Seems to have benefitted Ajax anyway. Portugal have B teams in their lower leagues. Austria have b teams in their lower leagues.

So when a good number of similar sized countries, that are better than us do it, don’t see why we wouldn’t.

Its all relative however, relative to the league we are playing in we have top top players just like Barca.

As things stand rangers have 1 player who has played anything close to regular 1st team football that they have brought through the ranks. That is not good enough. And if we can follow suite of the examples of other teams in very similar position to us then i think we will benefit similarly.

Is there evidence though?

You were saying there is no evidence that B teams help develop players. If that is your stance then you must be demanding or have evidence that reserve leagues help develop young players?

I think there are positives to reserve team football but I dont think the reasons it failed before have necessarily gone away. And did they not try to reintroduce it a few years ago and it failed again?

We apparently made big changes to the academy a few years ago under Mulhollabd. From what I’ve heard they’re still not expecting to see full impact of changes for a couple years. Granted that’s the easy thing to say.

Follow the money. Teams are operating with mid-20s squads. Nowhere near enough to support a reserve team. Go down a level and it is worse with some teams only able to support 20 or less.

Unless, of course, you play predominantly U19/18s and you might as well call it B team. In fact B team was intended for rehabilitating 1st team players but it’s rarely worked out. Having seen reserves in action there’s little much inspirational to the young players playing alongside a Griffiths, Hendry, Shved, Klimala, Kouassi etc. with their petted lips going through the motions with the young ‘ins to maintain fitness.
