On Ten Hag's starter menu...

First on the wanted list to Murtough and Co is Christian Eriksen according to the Daily Star (never thought I would ever say that) but the rumour is also carried by the BBC and on MOTD tonight.

He's on a 6 month contract at Brentford, available in the summer window. Obviously he's a risk with his medical record, but still; a classy player and without CL next season he's probably the type of desperado that United could attract to start the rebuild to challenge, whilst introducing some more youth team players into the squad under ETH. Apparently he is very keen on Eriksen.

Yes or no.... or total bullcrap from the papers?

Don't think Blind had a cardiac arrest like Erickson but equally brave nonetheless

Good to see him back playing but he's not going to help close the gap between us and the top two.

We need to go find the next Eriksens of this world.

maybe to do that it would be a good move to have the real Eriksen of this world to work and play alongside future ones?

lets face it we are not going to be able to buy anybody we fancy any more without the prospect of CL football and we wont probably see that for a couple of years realistically. The likes of Haland, Kane and Rice etc will be looking at top clubs to make moves to not ones in transition and rebuild projects. United will probably be seen as an interesting club to move to for many players albeit with money, but with future trophy winning prospects. Just like Newcastle.

The acquisition of top, top players is down the list of priorities right now anyway, surely.

Mid- to long-term sporting strategy (apparently non-existent presently), then tactical definition and planning, then the development of player profiles by position based on that, then the identification of options based on those profiles, then a recruitment strategy which will deliver the most, against the gaps, given the options has got to be the process.

No more, “Oh shiiiit, so-and-so a player who scored 30 goals the season before last is available on a free - throw money at his agent!” No more insane money bids for the player coming off the back of a breakout season regardless of whether they fit the profile for the position.

City buy to fit their footballing machine. Liverpool buy to fit their footballing machine. Bayern do the same. I don’t think United have even realised that that’s where they need to be going yet.

too many United 'fans' just clamour for the flavour of the month with Glazers money when it comes to recruitment options.

Its the proverbial 'kid in a toffee shop'.

Shorter version:

A football team is a machine.

When you create a machine, you design from the top down: what you need it to output, then how it needs to work to deliver that output, then how the various components will work together in process, then what those components need to look like.

You use the necessary attributes of the components you’ve identified you need to decide exactly which parts to create/buy, then you create/buy them and build your machine.

You don’t just start by buying random machine components because they look like value for money, have worked well in other machines, or come with five star reviews.

As you know, I totally agree regarding your diagnosis of United's predicament.

What I honestly don't know is whether your last sentence is accurate. There have been several public statements indicating a degree of recognition of the problem and the need to reform. There have been some structural changes to the organisation and a number of changes in personnel. Now, we would be idiots to assume that these changes have been as profound and as judiciously conceived as they need to be. But given the opacity around it all, and the fact the reforms look to be still in progress (scouts just left) and that it takes a long time between redesigning the machine and seeing its output improve, I personally feel unable to comment on the current state of the operation.
