‘#MUFC football director John Murtough met with Erik ten Hag in Amsterdam on Thursday as club intensify their summer transfer plans, hours after Ajax sealed Eredivisie title. Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong among the more ambitious targets.’
‘Van der Gaag (ETH assistant at Ajax who will follow him to United) were present at meeting but update from @SamWallaceTel as it emerges Steve McClaren was also there and likely to form part of new #mufc backroom staff.’
Picture starting to form:
- ETH as head coach, Van der Gaag as assistant head coach, McLaren involved in coaching somewhere?
- Murtough continuing as football director, with Fletcher reporting in as technical director. Assistant football director yet to be appointed, but sounding like it might be Andy O'Boyle.
- All of the above (plus Rangnick) to be involved in recruitment committee?

Murtough has a lot on his plate at present: technical development (Fletcher’s remit), recruitment operations and scouting, football negotiations (currently without a head-of), football operations, and overall responsibility for the youth setup and women’s team.

What happend to the other guy coming in as director?

Former Liverpool head of fitness and conditioning, now head of elite performance for the PL, interestingly a former role of Murtough’s too.

Got excited for a bit there reading he'd been at Liverpool but then checked the dates he was there and realised he probably wouldn't have been involved in the procurement of super inhalers!

My memory isn’t good enough to remind me what kind of state the Liverpool squad was in fitness-wise when he left there, but it can’t have been worse than that of present day United

When he left they were OK I think. They showed it in patches anyway with wins v Dortmund and us in the Europa League etc.
I was just going for the cheap inhaler gag I've seen doing the rounds to be honest!

I’m assuming you mean Paul Mitchell (Monaco) and not Mitchell Van der Gaag (confusing!)?
If so, then I think it’s quite possible that he was being lined up to head up the recruitment operation, effectively replacing Judge. He was head of recruitment at Soton and then Spurs under Poch, before taking on the wider football director role at Monaco.
Either that or he is/was one of the candidates to be Murtough’s assistant.

I'm not going to get excited just yet. We've seen this reported before and then transfers drag on and sign players the previous manager wanted a year late.
