Lasagne-gate - 7 May 2006

I just presume that most people on here are old enough to remember this day.

Spurs sat in 4th, 1 point ahead of Arsenal and a win would see them qualify for the UCL for the first time under the guidance of the much-loved Martin Jol.

Spurs were going away to West Ham, who sat in mid-table. Arsenal were home to Wigan.

What happened next is described here, with some quite funny quotes from Callum Davenport included:

We all know the outcome. I remember that day like it was yesterday. Excited about the day and got up, made a coffee and sat down with my lap top. Dropped on to the newsnow website to see if there was any early team news. Remember seeing one report about some players being sick, clicked the link, read the article, dismissed it as a bit of a wind up. False news, before we knew what false news was. But it wasnt. More andmore links to this story popped up on newsnow and it looked more and more like the truth.

I headed off to The British Queen, E11, to watch it. A pub mainly filled with hammers, packed to the rafters and with so many p!keys drenched in hair product and aftershave, the place had a particularly flammable feel to it. Unfortunately the building did not exploded killing all in side but the rumours about our squad were true. It was a truly unbearable experience , and a perfect sh!tstorm of WHU denying us and missing out on top 4 the to Arsenal.

While it was probably not the beginning of Spursy, it is probably the epitome of it.

With a similar scenario between Spurs and Arsenal happening this season, I have a slight sense of deja vu. I wonder whether this experience is in the mind of the club in any way and whether we are taking any extra precautions to ensure no disasters this time around.

COYS!

I’m honestly very confident we will wipe the floor with Norwich, let’s be honest lads if we can’t beat that shower of chit we don’t deserve CL.

Fully agree, don’t want to be in the CL if we can’t get a point at Norwich - better that Conte knows if he can rely on these guys now or not with a summer window round the corner.

I suspect we will control the game and pick them off, 2-0, fairly average performance. Hopefully Son gets both and Salah doesn’t net

Can see Arsenal winning 4 or 5 nil, not that it will matter.

So, its 1-0 to Spurs, Son scored.

Norwich are being lucky and not making it easy.

15 minutes left and we get a pen.

Does Kane hand it to Son?

I remember it well, but to be fair there are some differences from then to now.

Spurs were not really part of the established "big 6" then. Jol was great, but Spurs transition into a team capable of consistent CL qualification had not yet started. 5th back then was a big thing for us. We didn't achieve CL footie until 2010 under Redknapp.

Arsenal were much higher in the food chain back then, and us matching them until the last day was seen as an achievement.

Hopefully we won't have a food poison outbreak this time around. I do remember a lot of players played whilst not even 50% fit.

West Ham were a better team then, than Norwich are now. And their "cup final" thing was in place back then.

Very true.

I have only small doubts that we will get the job done but its nervy stuff and i hope we just rise to the occasion and smash it out of the park, instead of limping over the line with no fingernails left and a change of pants required.

What!!!! of course he doesn`t, Kane is our penalty taker, he he would obviously take it. If Spurs were winning 4-0 with a minute to go, then he might let Son take it.
