Ole

First, to be clear,
He was/is not a great manager.
It was the right time for him to go.
He should not come back

But

Time has proved he was better than many thought, including me.
He was a nice bloke, but if he didn't raté you, you didn't play.
I thought he was soft, but I've changed my mind.

So I will look back on his time with positive vibes.

Ole done well and was the perfect replacement for dour Jose but he was never going to win anything major. Trouble is, will Erik?

to suggest that the arrival of Ronaldo didn't change things at the club from the direction that Ole and Carrick were taking it and the baggage and factions it created is just nonsense. I dont believe that it was Ole who demanded that United bought him, as part of the plan...it was a opportunist, trophy signing sanctioned by the owners (surprise surfackinsuprise) and sponsored by Fergie to get it over the line. However I am sure that Ole was chuffed to bits that the player was prepared to work with him.

I think most United fans would prefer to turn the clock back to May 21 and start from there again, compared to the mess we are in now.

As for dross players... Sancho, Bruno, and even Maguire.... fans were pulling hair out with frustration in the length it took to do those deals. Fack the money!

And yes it is a WUM article to bring all this up again. 52 is getting good at chucking hand grenades in these days.

I expect literally nobody will agree with mebut I honestly believe that United would be in a better state than it’s in right now if Moyes had kept his job and managed the first team these last eight years.

Steady on mate. I would not have survived any more sexaymoyesball.

I do however maintain that getting rid of LvG was a big mistake.

We were embedding the philosophy. More than a match for our rivals and he got the team playing together as well.

That was the big mistake.

Shekschygaalball should have been given a chance

There were things to like about Van Gaal and what he was trying to do but:

- 'Embedding the philosophy'. I'm not so sure. If anything we seemed to be going backwards, with players more, not less, confused by the system.

- 'More than a match for our rivals'. We missed CL football in a year where City were poor, Liverpool were nowhere and Leicester won the league. For every Juanfield, there was a 3-0 drubbing at Spurs or Arsenal.

- 'should have been given a chance'. He was off in a year anyway. In terms of leaving something for the next manager, Van Gaal gave up on his own signings (Memphis, Darmian, Schneiderlin etc) very quickly and they were nowhere when he left.

1) Players knew the philosophy, he wanted them to move the ball quicker.

2) We matched City that season in 5th and won the FA cup. We had an unprecedented injury crisis but we managed to not lose to our rivals. We struggled to break down smaller teams.

3) Yes, giving up on his own signings shows that he did not give a toss if a player was not up to scratch. Which is something we have not seen from newer managers. He had no issues getting rid of Woodward like signings like Falcao and Di Maria

LVG was terrible and got us playing the most boring football we’ve seen post SAF.

‘Matched City’. The City who sacked their manager? Yeah, it wasn’t a vintage City side and very few ( other than the mentals) wanted LVG to stay.

He was unlucky with injuries both seasons, yes. But in his second he left us woefully short in attack by getting rid of the likes of Januzaj and Chicharito. I think we started that season with Rooney, Mata and the unproven Memphis and Martial as attacking options.

It wasn't just 'breaking down' the smaller teams; we were turned over by the likes of Stoke and Bournemouth in his second season.

'Yes, giving up on his own signings shows that he did not give a toss if a player was not up to scratch. Which is something we have not seen from newer managers.'

You could argue that José did this with Mkhitaryan, Ole with Donny.

Like I say, there was much to admire with Van Gaal but he failed as much as José and Ole did. Perhaps more so, given the comparative weakness of the league he couldn't even get fourth in.

It certainly wasn't meant to be a wum article, I saw Ole mentioned so put my thoughts on his time with us in an article. What I said is how I feel, nobody needs to respond.
Anyway first day of my hold, and it rained after all the glorious weather we've had. Very nice hotel though.

Keeping LVG because we got the same amount as points as City in a season Leicester won the league.

Missed that gem.

Ole was a good manager, just wasn’t going to win United the title with Klopp/Pep on the scene
