There have been more dangerous high tackles during the RWC, none of which led to a red card. One can argue previous bad decisions don't justify a referee making the wrong call today, but I still don't think was the correct decision. However you cut it, the referee had a choice between a yellow and a red. No-one would have batted an eyelid if he'd opted for the more common sense option of a yellow. In the heat of the moment, he opted for the most extreme option available to him. This 'laws of the game' argument doesn't work. No-one would be mentioning if the ref opted for the yellow, happens all the time - common sense.

The player is lifted and then forced or “speared” into the ground. A red card
should be issued for this type of tackle.
∞ The lifted player is dropped to the ground from a height with no regard to the
player’s safety. A red card should be issued for this type of tackle.

so what are you supposed to do if the tackled player leaves the ground ? cradle him back to the turf and then get on with the game again ?

i lifted a player right up above my head once in a third team game. the ref came up and asked me to put him down

Actually yes you are suppose to help him to land correctly. Its in the rules clearly you dont know them.

I completly understand that people are annoyed and its compounded by the fact that for 61 mins wales were better then france with 14 men. Its a hard pill to swallow.

Still the ref made the decision based on the IRB recommendations for such a tackle.

Look at it this way, you are playing and u tackle a player lifting him, turning him and dropping him on his head/neck/back area. You are a professional and so you know this action is against the rules of the game. Intention has nothing to do with it. The rules specifically state that the Ref must ignore the intentions of the player, and rule according to the laws of the game.

Some refs would award a yellow against you, you would conceder yourself lucky. Other refs might red card you, you will be disappointed but you must realise that there are rules for a reason and that you broke the rules.

This kind of ref decision is harder for the fans to take then the players. The players know the rules and must play within the laws of the game, they must not give the ref reason to punish them, they must always hold their destiny in their own hand and if you make a mistake like that kind of tackle you hand your destiny over to the ref. The ref cannot and should not be blamed for a mistake by the player. The only person who blame lies with is the player who offended against the rules of the game, he made the mistake and when a Ref judges you harshly for that mistake how can you argue. thats the rules. and lets not forget there are also rules for a ref. In this case the rules are clear, a mandate from the IRB states that a spear tackle and or a tackle where by a player is lifted in to the air and dropped must be punished by a red card. Its clear in black and white and all the players know the rule is there. Warburton made the mistake. he must shoulder the blame.

Worse is the fact that if he had returned the french player to the ground sadly he would have turned the ball over! thats the irony. He lifted him and dropped him, he had several chances to avoid being punished.

Iye they were but not at 71 mins. the ruck was on the french 22 and jones declined the drop goal, he took on the defence himself and lost the ball forward in the tackle. Real pity i thought. it was right infront of the sticks and he didn't go for it. This was soon'ish after his failed attempt but not the last carry. around about 71 mins. Maybe he didn't have the confidence to got for it.

I don't want to bring up the red card offence but it's hard not to. I'm going to say I'm on the side of the fence saying that it shouldn't have been a red card. It didn't look malicious but clumsy - I've always given a bit of leniency to 'spear tackles' unless in the worst case scenario, cos it is not easy to control a safe landing (we're dealing with collisions in fractions of seconds, balancing the extra body weight etc, and you can generally see when someone is trying to injure someone in a spear). That said I cant blame Rolland - just as the tackle was made in a split second, so did the ref's decision had to be made.

I thought at the time that would kill off the game as a contest. I'm really proud to say that despite playing 75% of the game a man short it was very much a keenly fought game. Sadly I knew the game was only going to end one way.

As for the drop goals that weren't? I have to say I wasn't surprised, and to be honest I'm probably one of the few people who wouldn't have gone for it either. I knew that after the first miss in front of the posts (from distance) we weren't going to get another kick going over the posts. Stephen Jones fluffed an earlier drop goal attempt. Maybe something wasn't quite right about his kicking and he really didn't want to take a drop goal. I honestly thought that we'd have more chance scoring a try than a drop goal. And I thought snatching a drop goal at 70 minutes would give France just enough time to get another penalty/drop goal opportunity to steal it at the death, whereas if we could have crossed then that would have put a bit of distance between us.

The Halfpenny penalty was heartbreaking though. If there was anyone I'd trusted to break the kicking hoodoo it was Halfpenny, and when I saw it sailing straight and true I thought we had it...

Overall I'm just gutted and disappointed. Can't really blame the ref. Can't really blame the players either - some individual decisions and mistakes cost us but that was an outstanding effort.

Just have the feeling that if Wales had made it through the winner of tomorrow's game would be a lot more frightened considering they'd have to face 15 of us.

Gecko mate, Gutted for you also.

Its a hard pill to swallow and ye the halfpenny miss was exactly that. "heartbreaking"

ANyway, the silver lining is that this is a young team and they are going extreamly well. I have never been a fan of Gatland, to be honest i have never even liked the man and for me he has always made it difficult to even like wales.

But he has gained my respect big time after this display. It was a true team effort from what i could see. Gatland was being laughed at for his polish expeditions... we nobody is laughing now. THe 6 nations should be interesting. With Saint Andrè coming in to steady the french ship, they will be back to the usual world class outfit. Wales will be looking for revenge im sure, Ireland will be looking for revenge against wales, England will be looking for revenge against france. Hell its looking like it ill be a great competition in 6 months. My money is on wales for the next 6 nations. I think Ireland will be 4th because i expect a big transition period coming in the near future. Well bit early to call it now i suppose but im kinda looking forward to it.
