Players Union

As anyone any idea what this may mean for the game .Up to now any player requirement for Union representation has been handled by the GMB Union.

"A rugby league players' union (1eagu3) has been formed with the aim of scoping the views of players within the game in an individual union separate from the GMB. St Helens second-row Jon Wilkin will chair the committee with Leeds forward and England captain Jamie Peacock, Warrington and Wales stand-off Lee Briers and ex-Wigan Terry O'Connor assiting him as representatives of Super League players. The board is made up by chief executive Ernie Benbow and non-executive director Mike Denning".

We have had a players union for something like 10-12 years now.
It's main purpose in the beginning was to get a representation of the players view when decisions on rule changes etc. are put to the Ceo's of each club at the annual end of season meeting.........the thing was, they never got an invite...

I personally haven't seen any good come from the players union.....all I have witnessed is ex-players trying to get a means of an income and only feathering their own nest.
We have had 3-4 different chairmen representing the union and at first they are vocal and seem O.K but then just sit on their hands.
I would be only guessing but I'd be surprised if 40% of the players were financial members of the players union when in the beginning after a great deal of hype the membership of players would of been around 80%.

I hope your players union can get off the ground and be a help to those players in need of help in the first place.....

I'm confused over this one. Surely the GMB represents all the players needs in all matters doesn't it?

The GMB have condemmed the move in tonights Manchester Evening News, saying that the move is to try and create an elitist organisation and has no experience, or skills to look after players interests.
The article states that the new set up have had applications from 75% of professional players from the 14 Super League Clubs.
Does this mean that the Union is to be confined to SL clubs only ?,if so it is a disgrace.
What next,Sean Long to advise on players nutritional needs ?.

If the English rugby league do not recognise this break away union then it is all a waste of time and energy because they won't be invited to any meetings to have any input in the first place......

Souths, I do not think of it as a break away Union as such because the GMB is a general Union for industrial workers,in fact I used to be a member myself when it was the Boilermakers Union before it merged with the General and Municapal Workers.
I think they are trying to form a Union to deal with RL issues only and what I am against is the thought that it may only be SL only and stuff the other divisions.
Looking at your point about the English RL not recognising this Union, I do not have much faith in what response we would have from the people woh have been appointed to lead this Union.
