SL XI v England - 2nd warm-up

England face a pretty experienced sl XI today and once again are fielding first which is not so good in a 3 day game when batsmen need practice.
I thought there used to be an unspoken agreement that the visitors would be given the choice no matter who won the toss.

England struggling to take wickets, although Stuart Broad started well by getting both openers out.

Sl are scoring at an ODI rate so we could face a big total unless wickets bigin to fall soon.

It's a dilemma, Finn can generate pace on any surface and has done well in Asia recntly, so it's tempting to play him, but who would he replace if two spinners are playing.

Similarly, Bresnan has a 100% record in tests and was a star player in the Summer before injury ruled him out of the Pak series. But again, if he comes in, who goes out, considering we're playing 2 spinners. These are nice problems.

However the problem with the batting is of more concern. Out of Morgan (not picked), Bell, Bopara and Patel, it's hard to think of which two will be effective in these conditions. Some would say none.

=======================

there's only 2 tests in this series. we probably have to win the series to keep nr 1 spot.

that means we need to score 100s.

who would i want at the crease having to score 100 in these 2 games out of bopara, patel and bell ?

unless he's in hopeless nick, i'd want bell.

If Bell plays it will be based on past performances rather than current form. Strange in 2007 Bell was second in the averages at 47, whilst Bopara was a flop.
If they drop Bell then it's five bowlers and on a spinners wicket Patel must be favourite.

On the BBC site they say Bopara has a side strain and can't bowl but remains in contention as a batsmen, so he's not an option as a 5th bowler (luckily). Maybe Trott will play that role with Pietersen or it reinforces the five bowler option.

we already knew that he cant bowl. why did they bother putting that in ?

He means including Patel and Bresnan.

that was my point. well, bopara and patel anyway.

i can not believe they would drop ian bell for samit patel. surely ?

Apparently Strauss said 5 bowlers is still a possibility.

Strauss said: "There definitely is more of a case for five bowlers here, but we just need to think about what is the balance to win the game of cricket."
