Sweden taking a different approach to this:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-52076293

Sweden has comparatively few cases so far compared to things getting worse in Spain which is on full lockdown and nobody even allowed out to excercise. Very odd.

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the flu kills 290,000 to 650,000 people per year. So far we have 33,000 deaths worldwide attributed to covid 19.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But the rate of death is the issue here surely. Italy 10, 000 deaths in less than a month, that can't go unchecked.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Rate of death is obviously a factor but as things stand those are the facts and stats and we obviously won't know how many die from covid 19 unil it's over.

Very weird considering their neighbours have taken a tough approach

They have a very different demographic and I would imagine a much lower population density - outside of Stockholm

italy themselves did say 2/3 of these people would likely have died regardless though, and they attribute every death automatically to coronavirus unlike germany.

Plus 25% of their population is over 65 and 95% of deaths have been people over 70 in italy.

Not playing it down as it is clearly severe and worse than flu as evidenced by spain but the numbers do have to be about halved really for genuine deaths from the corona

I'll use US stats as am more familiar (and invested). We have about 30-40k deaths from the flu each season. This is over 8 to 9 months.

From when we had our first death until now, if things continue to increase at the current rate we'd eclipse flu deaths in the next 10-15 days. That would put us at a month and a half time period where this would occur. Compared to 8-9 months.

i'd like to know how many people in the UK in March 2019 died from or as a result of flu. Then it would be interesting to compare, it would be worse the COVID numbers but i'd still be interested to know

Butvstbthis stage, its debatable if the flu stats have any relevance. Has flu ever killed 10000 people in one country in less than a month?

march 2019 might not really give a true reflection though as 2018-2019 we had virtually no real winter we only had 2 weeks of cold, as opposed to 2019-2020 we've had fackin really cold weather and bad wind and various storms since october

This also isn't taking into account hospitalization rate per never of illnesses. For all of the deaths, there are additional people that need hospitalization or intensive care which further burdens the system.

On top of that, it's not as if other health issues go away.

Exactly, there will be additional deaths as a result.

No idea but if flu kills up to 650,000 worldwide every year then the numbers must be fairly terrible during winter months in the countries that are worst afflicted.

soc if a person from corona coughed on say a pork chop, and u then ate that pork chop would you catch the corona but your stomach would kill the virus and you'd be immune from it?

People also seem to ignore that the flu is less contagious and has a treatment. It's spread and severity are also mitigated by an active immunization program. Hopefully the measures that we've taken are reflected in the coming weeks.

Whilst this is true, both Norway and Finland have taken a completely different approach.

Also, whilst population density is low in Sweden, you do actually have a lot of people living in close proximity to each other in apartment complexes. And with great distances between different places, public transport is often really busy.

Well I doubt Italy attributes to nearly 20% of global flu deaths.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
It likely wouldn't be transmitted but it also will not give you immunity. Don't ask your neighbor to cough on your Nandos.
