I meant everyone gets tested once. Then only test those who had a positive result (which would only be a fraction) again after let’s say 2 weeks. Then repeat again 2 weeks later for those who are still positive.
Meanwhile anyone is free to go back to normal after a negative test, and it’s assumed they won’t catch it because only the healthy people are the ones roaming around.
In reality that doesn’t hold 100% true but if they can develop more accurate and more affordable widespread tests then that could work in theory.

Because you would essentially need nobody to have the virus at the beginning / been in contact with anyone for 14 days for it to work

Then what happens?
Multiply that by however many people
Also what happens with travel as well CSTP and people coming in
And even if we stuck with the self isolation..
What about a load of migrants getting in like they do daily and bringing the virus in from where they come from and spreading it to everyone and so on
It is literally impossible
Government can do some things to help obviously not all short term but
Increase air circulation filter requirements
Require all buildings indoors to have them
Increase NHS budget, hire more staff and build more hospitals or bigger wards
Similar with schools modernise then
We are one of the least modern countries in the world

Maybe have a mandatory full on lockdown for a week or something. Then everyone gets tested. Then once the results are out, anyone who doesn’t have it is free to go out into the wild.
Extend that to travel as well. Not allowed to roam around until you can be sure the person entering the country doesn’t have it.
I know it’s not realistic unless there are no false positives, but it’s a nice idea if only a fraction of the population are infected. Once you can pinpoint those individuals, everyone else is safe in theory.

Also rather than testing the whole population at once, you could do that sort of idea on a regional basis instead, as long as no one is allowed to leave their jurisdiction.
Let’s say everyone in Southampton gets tested, then you can isolate who has it there. But the majority who don’t can be free again as long as they don’t leave Southampton.
Easier to control for a smaller community.
