There is nothing quite like flickering candle light to stir the imagination. As a child I had to make the terrifying journey from living room, down the dark and echoing passageway and up the stairs to bed - like so many other young people in those days - guided only by my little stub of candle stuck to an old saucer. I'd try to be brave but fear of what could be out there in the darkness was a real fear. Irrational, silly - but that fear has never left me.
