Captain James Cook FRS (7 November 1728 – 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. He made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.
Cook's Newfoundland charts were published between 1765 and 1768, and "marked a new standard in British hydrographic surveys" (Williams 1979). For their day, they were very accurate indeed and were not superseded by more detailed surveys for over a century.
James Cook is best known for his three expeditions to the Pacific; but it was in North America during the Seven Years' War, and then in Newfoundland during the 1760s, that he learned his trade both as a cartographer and an explorer.
