The McAfrika was a hamburger sold by the fast food restaurant chain McDonald's in Norway and Denmark and "traded" as a Limited Edition Olympic Games Burger. It attracted significant public criticism as a result of its name and the timing of its launch.

posted on 21/8/20

The McAfrika was released in 2002, just as a major famine was occurring in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Lesotho and Swaziland. The name of the burger was immediately criticized for being grossly insensitive, especially since it was released in Norway, one of the richest nations in the world.

McDonald's did not withdraw the burger, instead offering it until September 2002, just as planned in its campaign. However, as a conciliatory gesture, it allowed aid agencies to put up posters and donation boxes in McDonald's restaurants where the McAfrika was being sold. Furthermore, McDonald's spokesperson Margaret Brusletto apologized for the timing of the launch, saying "We acknowledge that we have chosen an unfortunate time to launch this new product."

Jesus Navas dedicated Sevilla's sixth Europa League title to former players Jose Antonio Reyes and Antonio Puerta.

Reyes was killed in a car crash last year at the age of 35, while Puerta was 22 when he died in 2007 after a series of cardiac arrests.

After Friday's 3-2 win over Inter Milan, Navas said: "To raise this cup as captain of my Sevilla means so much.

"For friends who are no longer here - for Puerta, for Reyes, and for my godfather who has died."

Reyes came through the youth system at Sevilla and made 253 appearances in two spells at the club. He also had a spell in the Premier League with Arsenal from 2004 until 2007.

Puerta also came through the ranks before making his debut in the 2003-04 season and went on to make 88 appearances.

Former Barcelona player Henrik Larsson has joined the club's coaching staff on a two-year deal.

Larsson, 48, spent two seasons at Barca as a player from 2004 to 2006, winning two La Liga titles and the Champions League.

Former FC Twente and Hoffenheim head coach Alfred Schreuder has also joined Ronald Koeman's backroom team.

Koeman left his role as Netherlands boss to succeed Quique Setien as Barcelona head coach on Wednesday.

The Dutchman played alongside ex-Sweden striker Larsson at Feyenoord between 1995 and 1997.

Glasgow City's Champions League adventure is over after they were overwhelmed by dominant Wolfsburg in their last-eight tie in San Sebastian.

The part-time Scottish side, in their first game for six months, couldn't compete with the world-class Germans.

Pernille Harder scored four, Ingrid Engen added a double, with Felicitas Rauch also on target before own goals from Leeanne Ross and Jenna Clark.

City's Lauren Wade netted an incredible consolation into the top corner.

Wolfsburg face Barcelona, who edged Atletico Madrid 1-0, in the semi-final on Tuesday.

A South African who was thought to be the oldest man in the world has died at the age of 116.

Fredie Blom's identity documents showed he was born in Eastern Cape province in May 1904, although that was never verified by Guinness World Records.

When he was teenager, his entire family was wiped out by the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. He went on to survive two world wars and apartheid.

Mr Blom told the BBC in 2018 that there was no special secret to his longevity.

"There's only one thing - it's the man above [God]. He's got all the power. I have nothing. I can drop over any time but He holds me," he said.

Mr Blom spent most of his life as a labourer - first on a farm and then in the construction industry - and only retired when he was in his 80s.
