Mark Chapman, the man who killed John Lennon, has apologised to the late Beatle's widow, Yoko Ono, 40 years after his death.

Chapman shot Lennon four times outside his New York Manhattan apartment as Ono looked on, in 1980.

He was denied parole for the eleventh time following a hearing last month.

During the hearing, Chapman said he killed the 40-year-old rock star for "glory" and that he deserved the death penalty.

He added that he thinks about the "despicable act" all the time, and accepts he may spend the rest of his life in prison.

Whitbread, which owns Premier Inn and Beefeater, has warned that 6,000 staff could lose their jobs.

The company blamed the cuts on a slump in hotel guest numbers since lockdown.

It comes as the government's furlough scheme, which still pays 27,000 Whitbread staff, ends next month.

Meanwhile, pub chain JD Wetherspoon has warned its 1,000 staff who work at airport venues that almost half of them could lose their jobs because of the dramatic fall in travel and tourism.

Ministers have ruled out changes to make it easier for transgender people in England and Wales to have their gender legally recognised.

They have rejected calls for people to be able to self-identify their gender and change their birth certificates without a medical diagnosis.

Ministers said reform of the 2004 Gender Recognition Act was not the "top priority" for trans people.

Equality campaigners said it showed a "shocking failure of leadership".

But women's rights groups applauded the decision as a "victory for fairness and common sense".

Barcelona have agreed to let striker Luis Suarez join La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.

Suarez is not wanted at Barca and the Catalans were happy to release him for free, providing he did not join certain other top clubs.

The Uruguayan agreed terms on a reduced salary with Atletico after a move to Juventus fell through because of passport issues.

Barcelona chairman Josep Maria Bartomeu then blocked the deal because he did not wish to sell to a Spanish rival.

But, after meeting with Suarez's representatives, the Catalan club have backed down, with the striker threatening to air his grievances to the media.

Atletico will have to pay a nominal fee of no more than 4m euros for the 33-year-old, which will be based on variables such as Champions League qualification.

Suarez will earn half of the 30m euros a year he was on at Barca at Atletico.

The move ends Suarez's six-year career with Barca, during which he scored 198 goals in 283 appearances and formed one third of a feared front three with Lionel Messi and Neymar.

He joined the club for £74m from Liverpool in 2014 and helped them win four La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys and the Champions League and Club World Cup in 2015.

Struber is a competent head coach, he has passion and emotion in spades which will appeal to the US market, his English is excellent and his nationality would likely appeal to the hierarchy at Red Bull, especially if they are looking to progress him to Salzburg or Leipzig (or both). You can see why they’d be attracted, and if they are I can’t see a single reason why he wouldn’t be on the first plane out there. His family wouldn’t leave Austria for Barnsley, but they might for Manhattan. Even if not I can’t see a few extra hours on a plane (especially when it would likely be in luxury on a private expenses flight by red bull) putting him off either.

Google has removed images on Street View that allowed people to virtually walk to the summit of Uluru, in Australia's Northern Territory.
Parks Australia had requested user-generated images from the sacred site be immediately removed.
And Google said it had removed them as soon as it had been alerted.
Uluru was closed to visitors a year ago at the request of the indigenous Anangu people, to whom the Australian government returned ownership in 1985.
Once better-known internationally as Ayers Rock, it is linked to many traditional stories of the Anangu.
Google's Street View function provides 360-degree images of different environments, alongside people's own pictures.

Republican leader Mitch McConnell has insisted there will be an "orderly" post-election transition - something the president has cast doubt on.

Mr McConnell said regardless of who wins the 3 November presidential election, there will be a peaceful inauguration on 20 January.

A day earlier, President Donald Trump refused to commit to this, saying "we'll have to see what happens".

Mr Trump has questioned the integrity of US postal voting in recent months.

The president currently trails his challenger, Democrat Joe Biden, in national opinion polls with 40 days to go until the election.

A pregnant woman dived into the sea in the Florida Keys to save her husband from an attacking shark.

Police said Andrew Charles Eddy, 30, was snorkelling on Sombrero Reef but was bitten by the shark almost immediately after entering the water.

His wife, Margot Dukes-Eddy, saw the shark's dorsal fin and her husband's blood filling the water, and dived in "without hesitation", officials said.

After she had pulled Mr Eddy to safety, other family members called 911.

He was airlifted to a trauma centre in Miami on Sunday where he was treated for severe shoulder injuries.

Rescue official Ryan Johnson told local media that Mr Eddy was in a "critical condition" when they arrived.

Son Heung-min scored one and set up two as Tottenham advanced to the Europa League play-off round after a scare against Shkendija in North Macedonia.

Son, who scored four goals against Southampton last Sunday, turned provider to set up Argentine Erik Lamela to calmly score the opener.

Joe Hart, who was making his Spurs debut, was beaten by a stunning 20-yard finish by Valmir Nafiu.

But Son drilled in the second before setting up Harry Kane for the third.

It was a decent performance by Jose Mourinho's side, who meet Maccabi Haifa at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the play-off round next Thursday.

However, they went from dominating the tie to hanging on before two goals in the space of nine minutes put the game out of Shkendija's reach.
