1560s, "moderate north or northeast wind," from Old Spanish briza "cold northeast wind;" in West Indies and Spanish Main, the sense shifting to "northeast trade wind," then "brisk, fresh wind from the sea." English sense of "gentle or light wind" is from 1620s. An alternative possibility is that the English word is from East Frisian brisen "to blow fresh and strong." The slang sense of "something easy" is American English, c. 1928.

Frank Bough, one of the most familiar faces on BBC television from the 1960s to 1980s, has died at the age of 87.

He joined the BBC as a reporter on what was to become Look North, and went on to present some of the corporation's most popular shows, including Grandstand and Breakfast Time.

But his career was brought to an abrupt end after a scandal involving drugs and prostitutes.

Bough died last Wednesday in a care home, a family friend told the BBC.

A talented sportsman, Bough began presenting Sportsview in 1964, taking over from Peter Dimmock before moving onto Grandstand - the BBC's leading sports show on a Saturday afternoon.

National League North's Chorley will face neighbours and ex-champions Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup first round.

Skelmersdale United of tier nine, the lowest-ranked side left, have an away tie at League Two Harrogate Town, while Tonbridge Angels host Bradford City.

Eighth-tier Marine will travel to Colchester United, Eastbourne Borough will take on Blackpool and FC United of Manchester will host Doncaster Rovers.

First-round ties will be played across the weekend of 7-8 November.

This is the stage at which League One and League Two clubs join the competition - no crowds will be permitted for any of the fixtures as part of the coronavirus restrictions.
