Birmingham City were angered that goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was left "in floods of tears" after being told she was not shortlisted for Great Britain's Olympic squad just 90 minutes before Thursday's WSL game against Everton.
Blues boss Carla Ward said Hampton, 20, needed consoling during the warm-up.
Ward said the timing was "unacceptable" and it "clearly affected" Hampton in the 4-0 defeat.

A spokesperson for the governing body continued: "We take full responsibility for the upset this has caused."

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is set to leave his role on Friday after almost five years in charge.

They finished ninth last season in their first year back in the league.
This season has proved a real struggle and they have endured the worst start to a season in Premier League history, although they have reached the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Their first league win did not come until 12 January, in their 18th game, when they beat Newcastle.

The 25th anniversary of the Dunblane tragedy is being marked privately by residents of the town this weekend.
Church services in memory of the victims are being held online due to Covid lockdown restrictions.
Teacher Gwen Mayor and 16 children were murdered by gunman Thomas Hamilton when he opened fire at Dunblane Primary School on 13 March 1996.
In a tribute, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the victims were "forever in our hearts".
Rev Colin Renwick, of Dunblane Cathedral, said people in the town will remember the events "quietly, privately and with respect for those who lost their lives".
He said: "Some will light a candle in their home, spending time in quiet reflection, prayer and remembering.
"As is the case every year, the people lost, and those affected most profoundly, will be remembered in prayers in churches throughout the community."
Prayers for the victims and their families will be heard during Dunblane Cathedral's online service on Sunday.
Barnsley continued their brilliant run of form with a victory at fellow play-off hopefuls Bournemouth that sent them up to sixth in the Championship.
Michal Helik tapped in at the back post to put the visitors in front before Arnaut Danjuma slotted home a leveller after good work from Junior Stanislas.
Dominic Solanke gave the home side the lead just before the break when he slotted home from Danjuma's low cross after the Dutchman got played in down the left.
Dominik Frieser finished well to equalise for the Reds before substitute Carlton Morris rose brilliantly to head home Alex Mowatt's fine floated free-kick.
Salford City held their nerve to beat Portsmouth 4-2 on penalties in the delayed 2020 Papa John's Trophy final.
Neither side could find a goal in normal time or extra time as both goalkeepers produced a series of fine saves to keep the game scoreless.
Salford keeper Vaclav Hladky made the most crucial stop of the game as he helped the Ammies to victory by denying Ronan Curtis in the shootout.
Ryan Williams had also missed with Pompey's first attempt, while Salford scored all four of their spot-kicks with midfielder Jason Lowe tucking home the winner.
The final was delayed by 342 days from its original date last April after the first coronavirus lockdown curtailed the 2019-20 season.
Salford will hold the trophy for less than 24 hours before Sunderland and Tranmere Rovers face each other in this season's final on Sunday.
