Portsmouth have sacked manager Kenny Jackett after almost four years in charge of the League One club.

Jackett, 59, had been at Fratton Park since June 2017 and leaves with Pompey seventh in League One, 10 points off the top two and two points outside the play-off places.

Portsmouth were defeated by League Two Salford City in the delayed 2020 Papa John's Trophy Final on Saturday.

They have also won just one of their past seven league games.

"Portsmouth Football Club would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Kenny for the work he has done during his near four-year spell at the club and we all wish him well for the future," chief executive Mark Catlin said in a statement on the club website.

"It has been an emotional past few weeks for everyone associated with Pompey and we now begin the process - which will be as short as possible - of appointing someone we believe can give us the best chance of finishing inside the top six. These talks begin today."

Angela Merkel's ruling Christian Democrats (CDU) have suffered poor results in two key regional votes seen as an indication of what might happen in September's general election.

The CDU is on course for about a quarter of the vote in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.

The two western states were once conservative strongholds.

Mrs Merkel is due to step down as German chancellor in September, after 16 years in office.

The slump in the CDU vote comes amid anger in Germany at the slow pace of the coronavirus vaccine rollout and a mask procurement scandal.

Several conservative lawmakers have quit over allegations they received huge commissions for arranging government deals to buy face masks.

Managers must understand that their decisions can "cast shadows" regarding players' mental health, says former Manchester City boss Mark Hughes.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 49 and women aged 20 to 34 in the United Kingdom.

The world of football has also been impacted by high-profile deaths in the past.

"It's vitally important that young players right through football get the support they need," Hughes said.

"A lot of clubs have provision of player welfare and have actual departments that address that. But clearly, the resources of all clubs aren't the same.

"It's difficult for football clubs. There are lot of emotions and disappointments, more disappointments than successes if we're honest, and it's about being able to recognise when somebody's struggling with those disappointments when maybe they're losing their job."

Hughes was speaking after the League Managers' Association announced it was joining Greater Manchester's Health and Social Care Partnership to raise awareness of their Shining a Light on Suicide campaign.

Financially troubled League One club Wigan Athletic have agreed a takeover with a consortium led by Bahrain businessman Abdulrahman Al-Jasmi.

The move comes after months of uncertainty at the club, which has been in administration since July 2020.

The Latics' financial problems went on to lead to their relegation from the Championship last season.

The takeover, which remains dependent on English Football League approval, is hoped to be completed by 31 March.

Talal Al-Hammad, who is set to come in as chairman, says the incoming owners want to "restore pride and belief" at the club.

Wigan's prospective sale to Phoenix 2021 Limited, owned by Al-Jasmi, comes after a deal with a Spanish consortium fell through at the start of January, after it was initially blocked by the EFL.

Pressure had increased on the need for a potential deal to be completed as EFL rules prevent clubs from starting successive seasons in administration.

A total of 11 parties were reported to be interested in a takeover prior to Al-Jasmi's bid, leading to Monday's deal.

Wigan, who are 21st in League One as they look to avoid a second straight relegation, are still without a permanent manager after John Sheridan left to join Swindon Town in November.

Earlier this season, fans raised more than £650,000 to try to protect the club's future as a takeover saga continued.

The 2020-21 season for tiers three to six of the women's football pyramid in England has been ended and declared incomplete with immediate effect.

The leagues were suspended when non-elite sport was paused in England as part of the ongoing national lockdown that started on 4 January.

The Football Association Women's Football Board said on Monday that no further fixtures will take place.

There will be no promotion or relegation between tiers three to six.

This also includes no promotion from tier three to tier two - the Women's Championship - and no relegation from tier six to tier seven.

Regional leagues in tier seven will be allowed to make their own decision on finishing the season, following FA guidance given to grassroots leagues.

Grassroots football is set to resume in England on 29 March as part of stage one of the government's roadmap out of lockdown.

Zoran Mamic has resigned as Dinamo Zagreb boss after his prison sentence for fraud was confirmed by Croatia's supreme court.

Tottenham face Dinamo Zagreb in the second leg of their Europa League last-16 tie in Croatia on Thursday.

Mamic, 49, was given a jail term along with brother Zdravko in 2018 in Osijek.

Croatia's supreme court reduced Mamic's sentence by three months but said he has to serve four years and eight months in prison.

"Although I don't feel guilty, I resign as I said before I would do if the sentence was confirmed," Mamic said in a statement on the Dinamo Zagreb website.

"I wish all the good luck to the club."

Spurs lead the Croatian club 2-0 on aggregate.

Rachael Blackmore made racing history as she became the first female jockey to win the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham with victory on Honeysuckle.

The Irish rider coolly guided the 11-10 favourite to win by six and a half lengths for trainer Henry de Bromhead.

It was an 11th successive victory for the unbeaten mare, and a landmark win for her 31-year-old jockey.

Last year's runner-up Sharjah was second again, with the 2020 winner Epatante in third.

"Absolutely incredible. I am speechless to be honest. I really am," said the delighted winning jockey, who hails from Killenaule in County Tipperary.

"I can't believe we just won the Champion Hurdle. Incredible. Unbelievable for everyone in the yard, they all work so hard.

"It doesn't matter what you are. We are jockeys. It is just a privilege to be here."

The Southampton striker, 24, has been capped by England Under-20s but qualifies for Scotland through the grandparent rule. Uncapped Kevin Nisbet and Jack Hendry are also included.

Clarke's side face Austria at home on 25 March, Israel away three days later and Faroe Islands at home on 31 March.

"I heard a whisper that he decided he wanted to come on board," Clarke said.
