Do we need start playing a 4-4-2 again?

I think 4231 will work with Lamela, Eriksen, Lennon, Soldado/Ade. Defoe just isn't good enough.

Whatever the formation, AVB needs to wise up. He has a fantastic squad and if we don't get top 4 he's failed imo.

Today has knocked me for six, I'll probably calm down in a couple of days, but right now all optimism has been sucked from me and I'm just expecting another year of being the nearly men.

I'd say yes, try it against Hull in our next home match. Or change the midfielders, give Holtby a go and maybe stick Townsend on the left and Azza on the right, we need to stretch the play more rather than keep cutting inside. Something needs to change, AVB just needs to show he has the balls to go for it

442 will never happen in a million years

Why not, pray tell?
Has our great new manager posted a notice on the dressing room walls?
"Achtung ... 4-4-2 Verboten"

"If you find yourselves together in their penalty area you must not hold hands, one of you must leave immediately?"

It wouldnt be that bad a shout the issue with 442 usually is the centre midfield as they get overrun. Yet we have the likes of Dembele/Paulinho/Sandro who would fit perfectly into the system.

Exactly.
And why has Sandro not played today?

F.uck knows mate, I genuinely thought he was one of our best players

AVB is firm in his stance against two strikers, and we also have too many midfielders to play 442. It just won't happen

Siggy ----> Eriksen <---- Townsend

That is why Eriksen has been disappointing. His role is to find space in attacking places and feed the striker or spread it out wide I believe. Unfortunately the inverted wingers are congesting the space, stifling Eriksen and making us extremely easy to defend against.

This.

Analog .... thanks for having a short name.
But I do not see any merit to the information you have just given us.
Questions:
1. If AVB has pronounced as you say, what does AVB say he will play. And wot does AVB have against 2 strikers?
2. And wot does having a lot of midfielders have to do with not playing 2 strikers? Why did we buy Soldado?
3. Does AVB think he can fool opponents by calling Dembele and Paulinho "defensive midfielders" and then telling them to get forward and shoot?

We could play 3 strikers, Defoe, Soldado, Lamela, and have two of them drop back into the midfield immediately.

1) throughout his career, AVB's formations of choice have never included two strikers

2) if we did play two strikers, it would be a waste of the vast amounts of midfielders we gave. Soldado was bought to be the line striker.

3) I don't understand this. When has AVB ever called them DMs?

The formation key, 4-4-2 or 4-3-2-1 or ... is simply a key for footballers who are none too bright to remember wot they are supposed to be doing.
"Oh yes, I'm supposed to be behind him..."

There's no point in playing 2 strikers as none of them are likely to be compatible as a pair.

posted on 6/10/13

Maybe you think AVB would fool Big SAM by calling them attacking midfielders?
I dunno.
If your argument is simply, "he's never done it, so he never will" then I would say "get a new manager". Being that predictable cannot be a good thing.

You alone know what "compatible strikers" are.
If you think it means they wont try to steal the ball from one another, or they wont pass to one another .....God they ARE professionals.

I think you meant "Holtby to create" since Eriksen is not in your squad.
And God alone knows why it won't happen.

Great minds eh Edin. I was a big fan of Kaboul. Unfortunately we no longer know if he's ever going to be fit or the same player as he was prior to injury. Hope he can work his way back but it doesn't look good

You clearly have no idea what I think. 2 poachers won't work together and 2 strikers playing right up against defenders won't work either. They need to have some varying attributes. You've watched football before?

Yeah mate, that season when everyone was going on about how good Ledley was I was always gobsmacked because I thought Kaboul carried him most the season.

My error. Holtby or Eriksen to create. Don't mind which at the moment. I think Holtby deserves it but I feel sorry for the stick Eriksen has got for today from some fans. Played a key role in Sig's goal last week and did well against Norwich and one defeat and he's overrated.

Well everybody ..... we had a disaster today.
We are still ahead of ManU but behind ... Sunderland.
Can THAT be right?
Another loss of this nature .... to relegation material, and AVB will be rather uncomfortable. More than he is already.
Mourinho said we could win the league. Was he joking?
