Even so, they were desperately unlucky against Russia in the World Cup. Conceded a goal to Russia's only chance. Completely dominated a match which Russia spent hacking the ball up the pitch, then lost on penalties.

Not really.
They bombed at the 2014 WC and 2016 Euros, despite having settled sides.

They entered Russia in far better form and more optimistic mood than the Euros with a rejuvenated squad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But they’re just a watered-down version of what they used to be.
Laboured, too much aimless tiki taka or whatever they call it, not much steel. Lopetegui wouldn’t have changed that.
It was different when they had Casillas, Puyol, Villa, Torres, Xavi & Cesc. They had genuine world-class talent.
Spain had the massive manager disruption, to be fair to their world cup.

Who's arguing they didn't? Perhaps you miss the point, but all I was saying is had they scraped through that Russia game which they should have won, I'd have fancied them against anyone up to the finals. I'm not contesting which matches they won and lost. I'm making a simple conjecture.
