So missing a pen is a clear and obvious error and VAR helps the ref. But when giving a pen that is a clear and obvious error, VAR does nothing?

CL draw:

The Slaves defender did himself no favours by going in so clumsily on Mendy. You can almost see the momentary hesitation as he tries to pull his leg back.

I'm with you on that, GT. Mendy saw the tackle coming and left his leg out and waited for the contact.

The Alaves defender still shouldn't have made such a silly mistake so early in the game. Made it too easy for the ref.

Madrid are worse than us.

That's twice they've had to look at the ref's ankle in the past 10 minutes since he got clipped.
