It's just two levels of formula.

You're looking for this line:

y = a + bx

Your variables are y and x. Good to this point?

a and b just represent statistics. You will calculate them using your data.

Say x has 4 entries. x1 to x4. You will have a couple of stats:

(all)x = x1 + x2 + x3 + x4
(all)x^2 = x1^2 ... + x4^2

I hope i'm not making this more confusing.

There will be some stats for y as well. And one for xy. Then you punch them in (at this point they will all be numbers) to your formula for a and for b. Then a and b will be numbers, and you will have your line / gradient.

Is there a different between regression and ordinary least squares?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ordinary least square technique is a type of regression model I think...

You are plotting a line yeah. You're turning data into a model. It's not the only way to turn data into a model, and it's almost always one of the worst ways, but it's a tool which will come in useful.

To create a line you need 2 unknown things. So a and b are just numbers which you calculate. As x changes, so will y.

At x = 0, y = a

At x = 10, y = a + 10b

At x = 50, y = a + 50b

Creates a straight line, with gradient b.

Terry Jenkins and Jamie Lewis both out. Looking good for Darren Webster to nick a slot late on.

I like Webster

The maths on your course will probably get harder than GCSE i'm afraid. It's a further maths A level technique we're talking about I think, albeit quite a simple one.

I started enjoying Thornton in the premier league last year, he smashed Ando, drew with MVG and beat Taylor 7-4 and even though he was definitely firmly an also ran, it was entertaining.
