Is he? hes okay nothing special imo, very simple with the occasional long ball
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, he is, which is why his club and national team play him in the position which requires him to get on the ball from deep and pass the ball. His whole role is literally about passing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
if someone said name a top passer, hendo wouldnt pop into your head, he does the basics well enough
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He would pop into my head as I watch football matches where he is excellent at passing the ball.

Why didn't they have 'excellent' next to his passing rating?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His stats according to their algorithm aren't 'excellent'. However stats only tell you so much, as you well know. If you actually watch his technique in his passing, you'll see something which stats won't show you.

Now I'm not saying he's Gerrard level, a world class passer of the ball but he's a tier below, hence why he is chosen to play the position he plays.

He's comfortably the best passer in the squad now Coutinho has left. You only have to look at his assists to see he can weight and manipulate a ball. Underrated one touch passer too. That's why Klopp starts him and likely will again next season too.

Henderson is a good passer of the ball. I do feel though at times he can be a little uambitious with his choice of pass. His job is to recycle the ball which he does very well, but his choice of ball sometimes is the safe ball option.

I think it depends on what's happening in the game. If we're leading he'll play shorter safer passes. If we aren't he'll play riskier passes and go a bit longer but ultimately his role is to keep the ball moving to get us from defence to attack quickly if we're needing goals or to keep the ball if we're not chasing the game. For me he's excellent at choosing when to go for it and when to be calm and safe. A couple of assists he made this season were world class assists that very few players could have pulled off. You can't do that without great passing ability,

Which goals were they?

The assist at Spurs was very good indeed but he's playing deeper than that as a rule.

It's more about the early switch wide which he's done really well the past few games and he looks fit again which he needs to be.

Yeah that was a good one, his only assist of the season funnily enough, dont get me wrong i dont think hes bad on the ball, just dont think hes particularly great

His managers seem to disagree as they put him in the role which requires you to be a great passer. Was it last season he completed the most passes in the league?

11th last season for most completed passes says PL official site, although he did miss a couple of months through injury.

Or they think hes the best passer out of the available options

Genuinely amazed there are people out there who think Wanyama is as good a passer as Henderson.

Staggering stuff.

He is a good passer but he is too cautious and passes back far too many times in a game.

I also don't like the way he tells other players to play it backwards. There was an occasion against Porto when he was telling Robertson to play it back and Robertson played it forward and we were straight into attack mode.

If he can cut that out of his game then I may start liking him again

We ultimately look a better side with Henderson in the team, if that’s because it free’s up Can to do the job he’s better at in being a box to box player.

Agree to an extent but I do think he's told to a bit. Also, our game management in that game was very, very good. There is a time to push and a time to hold so it's the safe passes when we NEED to take a risk that I sometimes find frustrating but that's us as a side.

Must have been the season before then. He also completed the most passing in the opposition half, which goes against this passing backwards nonsense.

It's quite simple, the role he is given, he looks up and if the pass is a risk, keep it. There are other players higher up the pitch that can and will take risks, where it won't hurt as much. His job is to turn defence into attack which he does really well. If its not on and the midfield close him down then he passes to a centre back who steps up and brings the ball forward. It may be seen as less of a risk, which it is, that's the point but it is also on those occasions the best way to move up the pitch.

It's basic tactics and I'm surprised people don't understand that.

A home acca of the four main games tonight would have been 223/1. Obviously boosted by the 25/1 for Wigan

Even Gerrard said he plays it too safe.

Chelsea vs Barca should be a good game tonight.

You know I find it astonishing that posters use the "always the victims" saying so freely on this site, despite the fact that it has connotations to the Hillsborough tragedy.
