Alisson should be back before the end of the month apparently. Get him and Thiago back and things should be ok despite the loss of VVD.

42m euro is a bargain for Upamecano next summer, how much extra would they want to take him 6 months earlier?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Knowing Liepzig they would want £60m
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His release clause is £38m which can be activated next summer.

That was last weekend Robbing.

Robbo is the new Scotland captain by the way.

Really hope not. Whenever I've watched them live I've been massively unimpressed. Not nearly good enough, unless we want to revisit the Andy Carroll type striker

Upamecano though I like a lot. He's a beast.

Klopp basically confirmed in the presser before yesterday's game that Matip can't play more than one game a week.

It really is Gomez time to step up.

posted on 22/10/20

Maybe not even Gomez's time, but Fabinho's time, he was excellent at CB last night. Not just his goal line clearance but he was combative, won tackles and dealt with pretty much everything thrown at him. Solid performance actually.

Yeah if Matip is playing more regularly than once a week he is bound to get a lot of injuries, his body just can't handle it.

I'm sure Klopp will be planning well in advance the types of fixtures that he will want him playing in, likely those where we need more aerial ability.

You'd probably want him playing against West Ham because of Antonio and perhaps against Sheffield while Gomez's extra pace would be more useful in the Man City and Leicester games.

Klopp is going to need to rotate those two well.

I'm not actually 100% sure about playing Matip against Antonio. He's a powerful striker, Matip is very slim and I've seen him get muscled once or twice off the ball, he doesn't seem to be as strong as what you'd expect for somebody of his size.

I was really impressed with Fabinho last night, as I was against Chelsea. Found myself wondering whether we'll be talking about a Fab-VVD partnership as of next season.

I think it is something that can be considered personally because it seems to be working well with Fabinho. Important to see how consistently he can keep it up over the season now.

My only slight concern is he seems to go in for the tackle regularly as opposed to just putting attackers under pressure and moving them away from danger (not sure I've explained that well...).

His timing of tackles is excellent but it wouldn't surprise me if he gives away a few pens this season and free kicks in dangerous areas.

posted on 22/10/20

My preference is still Matip at RCB and Fab in midfield. Like Neo said against West Ham we need the tall men in. They have Antonio, Rice, Soucek and the 2 CB's who are good in the air. Even with VVD last season they gave us a lot of airel trouble.

posted on 22/10/20

I don't think Gomez needs to be rotated that much other than for a rest.

His injury proneness is overstated given the majority of his injury's have been impact based. He doesn't pick up niggles in the way Matip does.

posted on 22/10/20

I used to see Fabinho be half a yard off with his tackles but since adapting to the league he does time probably 90% of them bang on.

Obviously you can say that other 10% will, at some point, lead to a penalty/dangerous free kick but for me that's still more reliable than Matip and Gomez imo.

Just looked up Matip's stats, before last season he'd averaged 35 games a season over a 10 year period. That's pretty good tbf.

Hopefully last season was the anomaly and we can get circa 30 games from him this year.

Don't know about you guys but Milner seemed a little off the pace last night. Was watching on my phone with no commentary so not the easiest to judge.

Just lack of recent match time or a sign he's starting to slow as a footballer?

That was more due to Curtis in midfield which did not work so Milner was overloaded. When skipper came on 2nd half he was back to his best.

Also I said this on the match thread but I thought we looked better with Jota, Shaqiri and Taki than with Mane Firmino and Salah.

Firmino has been terrible recently I definitely think it's time for a change up front.

posted on 22/10/20

We looked better because Ajax went for broke and left so much space at the back. Had we had Mane and Salah still playing we would have scored the 2nd goal.
