Fear of Flying

I wouldn't mind getting on a (safe) plane to fly. It's 6 years and counting since I stepped off this rock called England. As an infrequent flier I have to say, seeing the clouds below you is such a strange yet beautiful sight and is quite incredible really. Mankind has only been flying for about a century. Think about how many people have never experienced air travel.

As said above, when flight journeys go to plan they can be quite the experience but if something goes wrong then the outcome usually doesn't end well.

Thoughts and prayers are with those involved in this tragedy

Do you mean there's more chance of being involved in a car crash? or do you mean car crashes are more life threatening than plane crashes?

---

Car crashes happen more often but are rarely fatal, really. Planes going down is rare, but chances are if you're in a several hundred ton tin can and it goes down, you're probably fúcked.

Most plane crashes have survivors in some capacity.

I use to watch the reconstruction programmes a lot and I would say on average one in 5 I watched had no survivors.

Suicide (Latin suicidium, from sui caedere, "to kill oneself"is the act of intentionally causing one's own death.
============
How can people call this tragedy a suicide?!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is Suicide though, it's just combined with Mass Murder

If the pilot goes to the bog, get a cabin crew staff to sit in.

but they can't fly can they?, and the 3rd pilot is redundant today isn't it?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Even if they can't they can at least open the door and give the other pilot a fighting chance to save the plane.

''last flight I was on, the plane was like a yoyo on a string.''

'Walking the Dog' i think i could take, 'Around the World?!' you crazy!

''At least when I'm on a rollercoaster I'm paying to be terrified.''

The LoveBoat ain't a roller coaster ride man... just saying.
but the reverse has happened before, i remember going on the Black Hole Alton Towers and thinking is that it?

we humans are a weird bunch....

We all know that he'd have made this ten times worse on the ground if he'd wanted to.

I wouldn't say fear of flying is an irrational fear. It's pretty rational to me for people to have a fear of being that high up in what is essentially a large hunk of metal.

Most fears are rational, they can be overcome with greater understanding though.

I fly a lot, long distance even and news like this freaks me out.

I reckon the fact you're surrounded by other passengers takes a bit of the fear out of it, imagine being the only passenger, reckon you'd be nipping a bit

That is a good point Mark. It used to get to me a lot, to the extent that sleeping pills and vodka still didn't make much difference.

What made me ok was when I had children - changed the way I had to cope with it completely.

Seriously?

The worst part about flying for me is the descent and the changing pressure. Had an unpleasant experience of ear popping when I was younger.

anyone have any good tips to overcome the fear that the plane is too heavy to take off?

Cruising at altitude i'm fine with but the "strain" of the plane taking off freaks me out, especially cos if things go wrong not much time to do anything about it.

Got more chance of winning a jackpot lottery ten times in a row than getting kiiled in an air crash. I'd be more scared of getting hit by lightning when there isn't even a storm. All gonna die, why worry when...just that might kill ya!!!
Oh yeah and there are more than a few mental cases out there as well as natural born idiots!

Final Destination film made me scared of flying.

I just don't like the pressure on my ears, seem to have quite sensitive ears as it is...

TBH in most forms of transport I am pretty relaxed, even if I am in a friends car and he is driving like an idiot I just relax and enjoy the ride (I will slam down my imaginary break at the last second if I think we are going into something)

My theory is someone else is in control of the vehicle, I have almost no bearing on whether we arrive safely or crash and burn horribly, I have no power or responsibility over the situation... so why worry?

I can't change what is going to happen so I just relax and let it happen...

Its more true in a plane than a car though, I guess in the car I could warn the driver.

I'm not scared of planes but pretty much everytime I fly I'll have some deep and pretty insignificant thought that maybe the plane will blow up or crash or something, then again I bet everyone does it. I just don't pay attention to the thought as I know logically/rationally chances are slim. Having said that I'd be unbelievably scared if the plane got taken hostage or was on a descent into the Alps like the victims of this crash
