I have a PC laptop, but that's mainly because they're cheaper.
Money aside, I would always recommend a Mac over a PC. In my experience, Macs are better in just about every way.
If its for uni work and longevity I'd go for a Dell.
If she is a gamer then chances are within 3-4 years the spec will be too slow for games released in 2-3 years.
I've never been a gamer do my Dell has lasted me 4/5 years. I bought Dell as at the time I was an IT team manager and every PC we had was Dell
na not a gamer
whatever that is......

Get on Amazon on Friday(black friday) and pick something up in the £350 price range. I never spend more than £400 on a laptop. Last one was £280
Depends what she needs it for really.
If you want an all purpose machine for essay writing and internet browsing etc you don't need one with an expensive processor or graphics card which is where most of your money will go.
For Photo Editing or Gaming you need a high end graphics card.
An i3 or low end i5 processor would do the trick
I just purchased a Lenovo yoga 3, excellent machine can be a laptop and a tablet don't ask me about the spec stuff, all I know is it's feckin fast
And it's a skinny bassa unlike my old fat iPad
I bought an acer laptop 4 years ago and never had a problem with it,think it only cost about £400
Depends what she needs it for. And how much money you're Willing to spend.
I've owned both a Mac and PC. And a Mac is by far better and more reliable, they also tend to last longer. Don't get viruses either like with PCs.
But I spent the extra money on a Mac because i do video editing a lot in my job. So a Mac was better for that, better screen and better specs, also the programs at the time I needed weren't PC compatible. Recently upgraded it quite cheap as well. So now works like a latest Mac.
You could always get a cheaper Mac like an air.
But PC laptops aren't terrible. But personally I wouldn't go back to owning one.
mmmmm
Mac seems to be the preferred option.....fek
Now will Black Friday see these reduced ?
Macs are better if you don't mind spending the money. But if you think she really wouldn't need a Mac for what she requires it for. Then I'm sure a PC will be okay. People may have different experiences. But I've never had a problem with a Mac, just overall more reliable and last longer. Know a few friends who own PC and they seem to encounter more problems, whereas the others with macs like me have no problems.
Now will Black Friday see these reduced ?

all good advice folks
though the trendy must be shinny apple addiction factor may yet win the day
Dont buy anything Dell its shiiiit, their hard drives contain a partition so lose your hard drive or want to expand or change configuration your doomed .
Lap tops are too easily broken and stolen and have overheating issues which over time will slow the processor up. esp when used by folk who dont understand this and insist on using it on their knows or beds.
I'd go for a HP Pavilion pc, i5 Intel processor, 8 GB ram, and 2 TB hard drive with Radeon graphics. comes with windows 10 which means you will never have to buy another operating system.
relatively future proof, easily upgraded and a lot less fragile than a lap top. Also its a fast as feck.
Macs are a posers pc, they cost twice as much but do half as much.
Stick to a PC.

Utter nonsense, Mac os x software has more vulnerabilities than all versions of windows put together.
malware infects macs through java same as pc's. apple are lying when they say macs dont get viruses. kit.m.a and rootpipe are two malware problems for macs just of the top of my head, there are more
My advice would be to ask on a forum like http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/.
I was building a new PC and these guys helped me understand what was important and what was not, they'll be able to point you to a good deal.
