I do find that shocking. Thats taking your audience for granted. The only thing that looks planned was, to kill off the original trio. Maybe Leia dies in Ep 9.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yup they just couldn't wait to kill them all off could they.

I just don't understand why they didn't take a little more time to plan out this new trilogy. They bought the rights of Star Wars forever so they weren't under any time constraints.

The fact that they didn't appear to plan any of it and just passed it to new directors and writers as they went along shows horribly in my opinion.

Rey's character is a prime example of this mess. She's perfect from the start and can do everything without any apparent training. She has little to no character development and no chance to progress and develop as Luke did in the original trilogy.

Even if she did have some training that she can't remember before she was dumped on Jakku as a small child it still doesn't make much sense why she's such an awesome force user and pilot etc without any practice.

So now the buck is passed back to JJ to untangle this mess that he's inherited in Episode 8 and explain everything. And I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we never get a reasonable explanation as to why Rey is so brilliant from the start. It'll be half baked and vague I suspect.

Tbf Luke’s story arc is basically the same as Obi-Wan.

Try to train a new Jedi
Fail & create new evil
Try to stop them
Run away & hide
Get drawn back into the fight
Die battling creation

Job Favreau has revealed his love action Star Wars series will be based on a mandalorian:

revealed that the series will take place after the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, and will center on a "lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy."
"After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett," read the graphic, "another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic..."

I’m sold

Wonder how the fans will react when the Mandalorian turns out to be female?

The synopsis has me intrigued but so did TLJ trailer. I need to see a bit more before I allow my excitement to build but the mandalorian approach is a great starting point.

----------------

I am actually in two minds over this.

I like the idea of expanding the universe and exploring new characters without the constraints of the already established movies.

I worry that a SW series with (most likely) little to no Sith, Jedi, Empire etc may dilute SW feel of the show and it turns into some sort of run of the mill 60 minute action show. Like an A-Team in space. Or a mandalorian littlest Hobo.

I’m just excited to see them do something different, and expand the universe a bit.

Plus i rate Jon Favreau as a writer/director and he’s like Filoni when it comes to Star Wars, massive fan of Star Wars and i think he’ll make something fans are going to really love

Very excited for this as well. I think that live action tv shows could be the direction they go towards more, especially if this is a success. As I suspect it will be.

Latest rumours on the net suggest that given the negative reaction to TLJ - a lot of fan service will be put into Episode 9 - most notably, heavy prequel content.

Expect to see the return of Anakin Skywalker in some capacity.

Anyone watched any of Resistance?

Caught the hour long first episode last night. Its ok. Definitely comes across as looking for a young audience, but the setting is very intriguing. There are so many possibilities of what can be done with the show. The idea of a young ace pilot being recruited for spying missions on the First Order just gives them so much scope to build on.

Its certainly no clone wars, but it is a Disney cartoon. So even if the tone is lighter, the opportunity for great storylines is there.

I reckon it'll hold my interest.

Heavy prequel content?

Yippee. Can’t wait to hear more about midichlorians and watch wooden acting.

I have yet to give resistance a watch and I remain both sceptical and reluctant to sit down and give it a try.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aye but it's Filoni. He's not let us down so far.

2nd Ep wasnt bad. Still aimed at a younger audience but the first order has been properly introduced with Phasma and the red pilot.

Decent with promise

The real power of Star Wars was its mythology.

The sequel trilogy has tried to be smart by deconstructing the mythology that went before - which is totally foolish.

Say what you want about the prequels but the mythology was excellent; the virgin birth, the rule of two as a Sith Philosophy etc.

George Lucas spoke briefly about his idea for the sequels and how he would've explored the microbiology aspect of the Force and creatures called the Whills who control the Universe by feeding off the Force.

Instead, we got a story group who said "lets take 40 years of lore and reinvent it, reinterpret it and tell people that what they thought they knew wasn't actually true"

Such a shame.

Really? You think they had a Story group?
Its hard not to think they took fans love of Star Wars for granted.
‘Juat need a couple lightsabers... some pew pew pew action... a familiar face... the fans will eat it up, we good!’..,

Yes, a story group exists - not a very good one.

I hate the virgin birth and the midichlorians.

The rule of two was very cool.

Lucas plan for the sequels did include the microbiology of the force and he was going to have it centred on teenage kids. So I’m pretty happy we didn’t get those.

Lucas real strength is writing a story, he’s brilliant at it. He did a fantastic job of it with the originals, once he became more autonomous with the prequels though he just went with whatever he wanted and that’s how we got a lot of the poor stuff in the prequels. And it didn’t help he really isn’t the best director.

Yup sadly this is probably quite close to reality. The fact that they had no actual story planned out for this new trilogy was it's major downfall and boy does it show. If Lucas had made the original trilogy with no actual story arc planned then they would probably have been crap as well.
