I wonder if Disney regret not setting Episode 7 a couple of years after the events of ROTJ and recasting all the main characters with younger actors instead ?

Maybe they could have just made a film version of the Thrawn trilogy books. Would have been better than what we've got so far.

Maybe. Personally I think bringing back the original cast was great and it’s easy to forget now that TFA was pretty well received when it was released. Not original in any way but most fans (myself included) forgave that because it was a reboot and an introduction to a whole new generation of fans.

What they needed to do was take that foundation, which was solid - it’s essentially a remake of ANH and they did ok with that foundation - and tell an interesting and compelling story. That’s well this all went wrong.

If they don’t regret putting Rian Johnson in charge of TLJ then they have rocks in their heads. I wouldn’t put him in charge of a plate of sandwiches.

I think the concept of bringing the old characters back was great. Their treatment, significantly less so.

Bringing back the original characters was a great idea but seeing how they executed the idea I really wish they hadn't now.

I've never actually read the Thrawn trilogy but a diehard Star Wars mate of mine swears by them. Whether Disney could have made a good movie out of that is anyone's guess.

Maybe they should have just left the Skywalker saga completely alone and just done their own stories and spinoffs like they have been.

I read them about 25 years ago. I can tell you that I enjoyed them but not a lot else! Completely forgotten the plots.

Guv do you think that the Thrawn trilogy could have worked well as a movie trilogy ?

The difficulty would have been making the fans accept a new cast because as stated above they are set just after the events of ep6. Other than that though they had all the right ingredients for a great trilogy of films.

I think that fans would have accepted a new cast. Can remember when it was thought that Disney we're going to do that anyway well before plans for TFA were announced. And many seemed on board with Disney going down that route.

They already recasted Solo for the Solo movie. They could have used the same actor to play Han in the Thrawn trilogy movies. Can't imagine it would have been too difficult recasting Luke and Leia as well.

I suppose the closest we'd ever get to it is a fan made Thrawn trilogy. If enough fans donated then someone could make it I suppose. Not sure it would be allowed to see the light of day though by Disney.

Have you read the thrawn books and if so, what were your thoughts?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Better than any of the movies. Though not sure how well the big bad would be. It would needed to have been a Heath Ledgeresque performance to pull it off (basically thrawn is evil batman). It would have been pretty cool if they recast the rebellion and then recast mark hamill as thrawn!

I haven't read them Guv, as I said earlier I have a diehard Star Wars mate who says they're fantastic. He actually said to me before TFA was made that Disney should have just made a Thrawn trilogy instead.

Also wading into the Thrawn debate I’d plump for someone like Mads Mikkelson. Already been used in the Star Wars universe unfortunately but would be brilliant

Anyone else think we're going to see time travel used in Episode 9?

Watched a vid that suggested that JJ will have to use time travel in Episode 9 and that there's nowhere else for them to go with this movie after Episode 8 hit a plot dead end.

Would explain how Palpatine would make an appearance in this movie apart from as a force ghost. Also the Hayden Christensen rumours make much more sense if he's not going to just be a force ghost.

The force ghost theories don't make much sense to me anyway (especially for Hayden assuming he's actually in this). Why would we want to see a movie full of force ghosts anyway ? Getting as much as we did of Yoda in Last Jedi was more than enough.

So if time travel is a major plotline in this movie then the question is how would it be used? What era would they go back to ? As far as the prequels era ?

I really hope not. I find time travel to fix problems a lazy tool used by writers, unless the film itself is about time travel ala back to the future.

Time travel in Star Wars would be horrible imo.
