New Star Wars prequel novels lined up for 2019
These Star Wars books will follow the adventures of Padme, Obi-Wan, and Qui-Gon Jinn...
Two upcoming Star Wars books are set to expand the world of the prequel films.
As revealed at SDCC, Lucasfilm will work with various authors on a series of canonical prequel Star Wars stories. The announcement began with the reveal of Queen’s Shadow; a novel by E.K. Johnston that dives into the history of Padmé Amidala. The story seems to take place sometime between The Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones and will follow Amidala as she transitions from being a Queen to being a senator.
That's one of those Star Wars stories that hasn't been properly told before, and it will certainly be nice to have more information on what happens in that mysterious time frame between the first and second prequel movies. Queen's Shadow is set to release on March 5, 2019.
The next confirmed prequel novel is called Master And Apprentice. We know less about this one, but this Claudia Gray novel will focus on Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn's adventures prior to the events of The Phantom Menace. Given that the pair seemed to be early into their master/apprentice relationship in that film, we're going to assume that this book will pick up around the time that the two Jedi were paired together.
Master And Apprentice is currently scheduled for release on February 26, 2019.
At this time, Lucasfilm did not reveal any other canonical prequel books that are in the works. However, it's certainly not unreasonable to suspect that some kind of expanded stories are in the works. After being purchased by Disney in 2012, Lucasfilm made the controversial move to rebrand the Expanded Universe as Legends and start an official canon anew. This meant fan-favorite stories and characters weren't part of the actual Star Wars timeline, though the new films and TV shows have gone to great lengths to incorporate certain elements from Legends. This year's Solo had plenty of examples for die-hards to spot.

I know a lot of folks have given up on the franchise after The Last Jedi – some in very inappropriate ways. I’m planning on finishing this out, but my expectations are very low. I expect top notch work from ILM, and the costume and production designers. Beyond that falls on the script, and they haven’t done a good job there.

The stormtrooper turned Resistance fighter has been at the forefront of the sequel trilogy from the very beginning, undergoing a drastic personal change. At one point, his primary motivation was to run away from the war and keep himself safe, but due to his experiences, he's now proud "Rebel scucum" dedicated to the cause. Of course, Boyega is one of several sequel trilogy veterans returning for the finale, which serves as the last episode of the traditional Skywalker saga.
Earlier this year, Boyega suggested Episode IX would see a time jump following The Last Jedi, saying that he was in the process of growing his hair out before filming. Director J.J. Abrams is just about to start rolling the cameras, so the cast has come together for one last adventure in the galaxy far, far away. There's still a long time to wait before Lucasfilm unveils any official marketing materials, but fans may have just gotten an early look at Finn's revamped appearance.
Boyega took to Instagram to welcome Star Wars newcomer Naomi Ackie (who plays one of three mystery roles) to the franchise. In the photo of the two embracing, Boyega is clearly sporting a different hairstyle from the one he had in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Check out his post in the space below:
Obviously, this isn't an actual still from Episode IX, but Boyega's look definitely lines up with previous comments he's made and the production timeline of the movie. Films typically alter a character's physical appearance to illustrate the passage of time in the story, so it wouldn't be surprising if this (or something close to it) is what the creative team came up with for Finn. There's also a business motivation for making characters look different: merchandise. Last Jedi toy sales were down, and a reason for that could have been the fact Episode VIII picks up just moments after Force Awakens. There was little incentive for collectors to buy the new figures since there wasn't much variance. It'll be interesting to see if others like Rey, Poe Dameron, and Kylo Ren get new looks as well.
The other notable aspect of Boyega's post is him greeting Ackie. It remains to be seen how she fits into the narrative, though it could be a fairly significant part (see: the casting call for a female lead codenamed "Caro". Of course, the sequel trilogy is full of young leads already, many of whom have been part of the trilogy from the beginning and have their own individual storylines that need to be wrapped up. If Ackie is a principal member of the ensemble, Abrams will have a to pull off a tricky balancing act to service everyone in the movie. Of course, he's no stranger to working with large casts, so he likely has a strong handle on things.

Ewan McGregor reiterates he would be up to reprise Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Star Wars spinoff movie, should such a project ever come to fruition. For a number of years, the Jedi Knight has been rumored to receive his own standalone film, chronicling the years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. McGregor's performance as young Obi-Wan in the prequels was well-received, so fans are very interested in seeing the actor return. Unfortunately, nothing has ever officially moved forward.
The closest Obi-Wan got to getting off the ground was last year, when it was reported Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) was in talks to direct. But following the underwhelming commercial performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm allegedly put "legacy character" spinoffs (like Obi-Wan and Boba Fett) on hold as they rethink their strategy. It remains to be seen if an Obi-Wan movie will ever happen, but the studio can rest assured McGregor is game for a comeback.
We attended round table interviews for McGregor's new film, Christopher Robin, where the actor was of course asked about his future in Star Wars. For those who have been following this story from the beginning, his comments should sound quite familiar:
"I don't know anything more about it than you do I'm afraid to say. I really don't, but I'd be up for it. You know that."
It remains to be seen how the Star Wars film slate shapes up after Episode IX debuts next December. The only other Lucasfilm movie officially on Disney's schedule is 2021's Indiana Jones 5, so the studio has some moves to make in the near future. While they have been mum on the likes of Obi-Wan and Boba Fett, they have confirmed projects like Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy, and another series developed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff & D.B. Weiss. It looks like Lucasfilm is taking a page out of Kylo Ren's playbook and leaving the past behind once the Skywalker saga concludes. If the franchise is to continue to thrive for years to come, exploring fresh horizons and telling new stories seems like the smart way to go. This isn't to say Obi-Wan will never happen, but it doesn't appear to be a priority at this point in time.
While it would be great to see McGregor portray Obi-Wan again, it wouldn't necessarily be the worst turn of events if it never came to be. The character's life has already been covered very extensively throughout the various mediums in canon, and he'll appear in the newest season of The Clone Wars and a novel by Claudia Gray. There's no denying Kenobi is a great character integral to Star Wars lore, but his story may be complete.

I think the biggest job for JJ and Episode 9 is lifting the previous films up, giving them more meaning and weight.
The biggest criticism of The Last Jedi for me was that it made The Force Awakens a bit of a redundant film.
I recently watched TFA back and that final scene that used to give me goosebumps is now anticlimactic.
I think they need to pull off something really special because it's clear that too many people aren't pleased with the direction of the trilogy.
I'm a firm believer in not passing full judgement until all three films are complete but Episode 9 really needs to hit this one out the park.

Because it had no clear direction? It does seem ridiculous that they didn't map it all out from the start, but gave each film to different directors and let them take it where they wanted.
I liked TFA but it does feel weaker for the direction TLJ went in & TLJ was a film that was mostly good, but fell flat for me. I have less desire to watch either of them back than I do TPM

The destruction of Alderaan showed the power of the Death Star, but now the Star Wars comics show how Leia Organa eventually got revenge for her home planet in the new film trilogy.
Even if Star Wars fans don't know the name "Alderaan," they certainly know the planet. The first world to be totally obliterated in the Star Wars films, the act was meant to demonstrate the true evil and brutality of the Empire (and Grand Moff Tarkin's Death Star) to keep other worlds in line. Princess Leia channeled the horror of witnessing her homeworld's obliteration into the Rebellion against the Empire… but that wasn't the entire story.
A part of Alderaan managed to survived the destruction - and Leia used every bit of it to support the Resistance’s war against the First Order, descendants of the Empire.
The new wrinkle to Alderaan’s place in the canon comes in Star Wars: Poe Dameron Annual #2, when the pilot and his Black Squadron are sent to recover a priceless relic for Leia (prior to the start of The Force Awakens in the movie timeline). A relic that turns out to be one of the only pieces of Alderaan that survived the first full Death Star firing: the knowledge of its people.
When Leia opens up the package set to be sold to the First Order for a small fortune, even she can hardly believe that her suspicions proved accurate. The box contains what remains of "The Archives of The Great Library of Alderaan," the place where the very best literature and knowledge the people of Alderaan ever produced was kept safe. The accompanying flashback gives a brief glimpse of the Library itself, but focuses on Leia's time spent there with her adopted father, Bail Organa (played by Jimmy Smits in the prequel trilogy). One can only assume that Bail's devotion to these higher texts is what made him such an important founding member of the first Alliance to Restore The Galactic Republic.
Bail Organa's ability to sense when the Empire was preparing to strike may have been shared by the rest of his people, as Leia reveals that the priceless knowledge contained in the library began to be smuggled off-world, away from any potential Imperial occupation. When the planet was erased, their history went with it - until it landed squarely in Leia's lap.
And Leia knows exactly how to use it to best honor the dead.
Leia explains her plan to have all of the data copied, so that it may live on. She also intends to make good on the promise of sending Poe after something incredibly valuable: the physical archives, along with the box containing them will be priceless to any collector, as the last evidence of the Alderaanian people. With the credits, Leia will fund the Resistance as it seeks to defeat the First Order, inheritors of the Galactic Empire that killed her planet in the first place.
It's a poetic tale from Jody Houser and Andrea Broccardo, and this connection made between the old Star Wars story and the new isn't the only one the comic has to offer. When Poe Dameron and Han Solo secretly team up to get the item into Resistance hands, they also assume the “ancient” information contained within it is weapon-related, not The Archive of The Great Library of Alderaan. But when Han learns the truth, he knows Leia is the only person in the galaxy who would know what to do with it.
Now fans watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi can know that every laser cannon blast, and every bomb hurled by the Resistance exists because of Alderaan, keeping up the fight on behalf of its lost people. Leave it to General Leia Organa Solo to show how dangerous information can really be.

Obviously, this isn't an actual still from Episode IX, but Boyega's look definitely lines up with previous comments he's made and the production timeline of the movie. Films typically alter a character's physical appearance to illustrate the passage of time in the story, so it wouldn't be surprising if this (or something close to it) is what the creative team came up with for Finn. There's also a business motivation for making characters look different: merchandise. Last Jedi toy sales were down, and a reason for that could have been the fact Episode VIII picks up just moments after Force Awakens. There was little incentive for collectors to buy the new figures since there wasn't much variance. It'll be interesting to see if others like Rey, Poe Dameron, and Kylo Ren get new looks as well.
The other notable aspect of Boyega's post is him greeting Ackie. It remains to be seen how she fits into the narrative, though it could be a fairly significant part (see: the casting call for a female lead codenamed "Caro". Of course, the sequel trilogy is full of young leads already, many of whom have been part of the trilogy from the beginning and have their own individual storylines that need to be wrapped up. If Ackie is a principal member of the ensemble, Abrams will have a to pull off a tricky balancing act to service everyone in the movie. Of course, he's no stranger to working with large casts, so he likely has a strong handle on things.

Ewan McGregor reiterates he would be up to reprise Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Star Wars spinoff movie, should such a project ever come to fruition. For a number of years, the Jedi Knight has been rumored to receive his own standalone film, chronicling the years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. McGregor's performance as young Obi-Wan in the prequels was well-received, so fans are very interested in seeing the actor return. Unfortunately, nothing has ever officially moved forward.
The closest Obi-Wan got to getting off the ground was last year, when it was reported Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) was in talks to direct. But following the underwhelming commercial performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm allegedly put "legacy character" spinoffs (like Obi-Wan and Boba Fett) on hold as they rethink their strategy. It remains to be seen if an Obi-Wan movie will ever happen, but the studio can rest assured McGregor is game for a comeback.
We attended round table interviews for McGregor's new film, Christopher Robin, where the actor was of course asked about his future in Star Wars. For those who have been following this story from the beginning, his comments should sound quite familiar:
"I don't know anything more about it than you do I'm afraid to say. I really don't, but I'd be up for it. You know that."
It remains to be seen how the Star Wars film slate shapes up after Episode IX debuts next December. The only other Lucasfilm movie officially on Disney's schedule is 2021's Indiana Jones 5, so the studio has some moves to make in the near future. While they have been mum on the likes of Obi-Wan and Boba Fett, they have confirmed projects like Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy, and another series developed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff & D.B. Weiss. It looks like Lucasfilm is taking a page out of Kylo Ren's playbook and leaving the past behind once the Skywalker saga concludes. If the franchise is to continue to thrive for years to come, exploring fresh horizons and telling new stories seems like the smart way to go. This isn't to say Obi-Wan will never happen, but it doesn't appear to be a priority at this point in time.
While it would be great to see McGregor portray Obi-Wan again, it wouldn't necessarily be the worst turn of events if it never came to be. The character's life has already been covered very extensively throughout the various mediums in canon, and he'll appear in the newest season of The Clone Wars and a novel by Claudia Gray. Because of this, there are only so many ways an Obi-Wan movie can go, and even then, it's worth wondering if the hook is strong enough to carry a two-hour film. There's no denying Kenobi is a great character integral to Star Wars lore, but his story may be complete.

I think the biggest job for JJ and Episode 9 is lifting the previous films up, giving them more meaning and weight.
The biggest criticism of The Last Jedi for me was that it made The Force Awakens a bit of a redundant film.
I recently watched TFA back and that final scene that used to give me goosebumps is now anticlimactic.
I think they need to pull off something really special because it's clear that too many people aren't pleased with the direction of the trilogy.
I'm a firm believer in not passing full judgement until all three films are complete but Episode 9 really needs to hit this one out the park.

Because it had no clear direction? It does seem ridiculous that they didn't map it all out from the start, but gave each film to different directors and let them take it where they wanted.
I liked TFA but it does feel weaker for the direction TLJ went in & TLJ was a film that was mostly good, but fell flat for me. I have less desire to watch either of them back than I do TPM

Been watching the TLJ trailer again and they did a great job making the film look better than it actually was.

The destruction of Alderaan showed the power of the Death Star, but now the Star Wars comics show how Leia Organa eventually got revenge for her home planet in the new film trilogy.
Even if Star Wars fans don't know the name "Alderaan," they certainly know the planet. The first world to be totally obliterated in the Star Wars films, the act was meant to demonstrate the true evil and brutality of the Empire (and Grand Moff Tarkin's Death Star) to keep other worlds in line. Princess Leia channeled the horror of witnessing her homeworld's obliteration into the Rebellion against the Empire… but that wasn't the entire story.
A part of Alderaan managed to survived the destruction - and Leia used every bit of it to support the Resistance’s war against the First Order, descendants of the Empire.
The new wrinkle to Alderaan’s place in the canon comes in Star Wars: Poe Dameron Annual #2, when the pilot and his Black Squadron are sent to recover a priceless relic for Leia (prior to the start of The Force Awakens in the movie timeline). A relic that turns out to be one of the only pieces of Alderaan that survived the first full Death Star firing: the knowledge of its people.
When Leia opens up the package set to be sold to the First Order for a small fortune, even she can hardly believe that her suspicions proved accurate. The box contains what remains of "The Archives of The Great Library of Alderaan," the place where the very best literature and knowledge the people of Alderaan ever produced was kept safe. The accompanying flashback gives a brief glimpse of the Library itself, but focuses on Leia's time spent there with her adopted father, Bail Organa (played by Jimmy Smits in the prequel trilogy). One can only assume that Bail's devotion to these higher texts is what made him such an important founding member of the first Alliance to Restore The Galactic Republic.
Bail Organa's ability to sense when the Empire was preparing to strike may have been shared by the rest of his people, as Leia reveals that the priceless knowledge contained in the library began to be smuggled off-world, away from any potential Imperial occupation. When the planet was erased, their history went with it - until it landed squarely in Leia's lap.
And Leia knows exactly how to use it to best honor the dead.
Leia explains her plan to have all of the data copied, so that it may live on. She also intends to make good on the promise of sending Poe after something incredibly valuable: the physical archives, along with the box containing them will be priceless to any collector, as the last evidence of the Alderaanian people. With the credits, Leia will fund the Resistance as it seeks to defeat the First Order, inheritors of the Galactic Empire that killed her planet in the first place.
It's a poetic tale from Jody Houser and Andrea Broccardo, and this connection made between the old Star Wars story and the new isn't the only one the comic has to offer. When Poe Dameron and Han Solo secretly team up to get the item into Resistance hands, they also assume the “ancient” information contained within it is weapon-related, not The Archive of The Great Library of Alderaan. But when Han learns the truth, he knows Leia is the only person in the galaxy who would know what to do with it.
Now fans watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi can know that every laser cannon blast, and every bomb hurled by the Resistance exists because of Alderaan, keeping up the fight on behalf of its lost people. Leave it to General Leia Organa Solo to show how dangerous information can really be.
