The Kante Problem Part 2

posted on 12/9/16

I think Leicester have had a difficult summer of working out who gets/deserves what in terms of new contracts, but ultimately from the accountant's point of view it comes down to what's the minimum amount we can offer to keep a player that we want.

The resulting problem we have is that we have some players like Vardy and Mahrez (maybe Drinkwater too) on big club wages, when what John's describing is that, last season aside, that isn't really where we are as a club. Those values then set a precedent elsewhere, particularly for any new players coming in. On the other hand, if we hadn't offered those amounts and Vardy and Mahrez had departed then the fans would have been furious and you get the opposite issues. It's a very difficult balancing act and we've erred on the side of caution with regards to the existing playing staff.

Funnily enough, King's new contract is far more reflective of where we are as a club in John's reckoning!

To be honest I include new contract periods and wages for Wes Morgan -Huth -Simpson -Albrighton and King - and question the Vardy second contract -just weeks after his already lucrative deal.as bad management and allowing agents to run business

A hard headed look at their future ability to play at highest level - nobody doubts their contributions in the past. Will we still be paying high wages after their sell by date with nobody wanting to match that money and the players with no motivation to move

Wait a minute. We're all agreeing with JG (100%!).

I agree!

I know, it's scary, the odds would have been longer than City winning the League last year!

The same thing happened under other managers O'neil gave Taylor and issue with highly paid over the hill players and taylor then bought Junior who stayed till the end of his lucrative gravy train.

And of course Shankly said "give a player a new contract before the start of the season you lose him for three months"

We need BS for some balance I think!!

I think as JG highlights one of the biggest issues we have is wages. But this is only a problem if you can't offload a player. I think for the Vardy's, Mahrez's and Slimanis of this world that isn't a problem.

But as he points out, Morgan and King may be more difficult to move on. Hopefully the contracts have solid relegation clauses in them and we'll be ok.

Are we going down then Mersey, is it that bad?

We've lost John Gee!!! I repeat we've lost John Gee....MAN DOWN!

Now hang on John. Just hang on. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect us to be fighting for the title this season. I don't expect us to make much of an impact in the champions league......BUT

Why can't we become one of the big (ish) boys in time? Why do we have to return to little old Leicester. You know, the one that gets promoted and relegated constantly. I don't want to return to skirting around the relegation places and I'm pretty sure the owners haven't spent £30m on Slimani to do the same

I know last season was a one off but why can't we build on it? I don't mean build on it by bettering it, I mean using our new found status to bring in some of the brightest talents. We have just appointed Eduardo Macia for goodness sake - he was wanted by Barcelona a couple of years ago....

Why couldn't we in time be the new Atletico Madrid? Yes I know it sounds mad, but we have the money now and we finally have a global status as a club players would want to join

I think I might just sit back and enjoy this.

I don't actually begrudge all those players their contracts. These are a handfull of footballers who actually DESERVE a bumper deal, unlike a lot of of the dross that gets signed up. Plus they're not exactly bad footballers.

There is no reason we have to become a yo-yo club. However hard nosed management of our resources will be a must for a club our size. We cannot afford to treat long term high wage contracts as recompense for services rendered- only as inducement for players we feel will contribute and develop over the term issued. An investment -not a thank you

Watching Everton tonight, Gueye would of been a great signing, just what we need. Strange we didn't make a move when Walsh was here. Looks a snip a 7 million.

I think had Walsh stayed we may well have ended up signing him.

Was just about to say the same thing Your Honour.

Why why why didn't we sign Gueye as a replacement for Kante whilst Walsh was here. He was apparently a target before Kante, so why not afterwards?!

There were players he was not allowed to sign which suggests Ranieri or other parties didn't want Gueye at Leicester?

An odd one no doubt!

Hold on, I thought Steve walsh had carte blanche on signings?

I also heard, although maybe not true that Walsh had restrictions on not targeting players already identified by Leicester?

posted on 12/9/16

I think he has restrictions on going for Leicester players. There's not much they can do about players he's spotted while at Leicester

I don't know why the club didn't move for Gueye but it's an expensive mistake they could see us hobbling around the bottom end. Depressing

Woooohh Hold your horses forth game of the season and BS you make it sound like we are going down like the Titanic.
Last year is impossible to repeat and the big 6 have spent a fortune to insure it does not happen again.

We have spent over 30m on a striker more than the value of our team two years ago. So chill pill time.

Enjoy the game as TB says we are in the champions league as champions of England. It does not get better than that.
