wow ..... is it a case of achieving his ultimate goal or has it really taken that much out him ??!!

He's put a statement on Facebook.

TL:DR - He had apparently said since Suzuka that he'd retire if he became World Champion. It's the only thing he wanted and now he's got it. Pulling a bit of a James Hunt.

dunno how to take it to be honest.... if its cos he just wanted to be WDC then I cant help lose a bit of respect for him as it should be in his blood to win, if its due to the pressure and affecting his happiness then I would sympathise with him

as I said if its for anything other than unhappiness, family reasons or pressure then it for me says that Nico knows he thinks he was fortunate to win this year. But if he indeed is saying that he planned to retire if and when he ever won then I lose respect for him as a sportsman/competitor.

The family man in me can understand him packing it in but the racing fan in me is very disappointed.

Very, very disappointed. Wonder who Mercedes will line up as a replacement?

Jenson Button?

Isn't Wehrlein a merc driver? Maybe a move for Alonso?

Button sprang to my mind too.

I don't believe for one second that he's done with F1 yet and a chance to get in to a dominant car and reform the dream team with Lewis could be too tempting for him.

Rosberg knows he got lucky, how weak.

Di Resta is no slouch, he beat Vettel in equal machinery

To be fair, Seb is nothing special

Wehrlein is not good enough in my humble opinion and will not push Hamilton.

Mercedes would not bother with Alonso, he is not worth the hassle and is past his best

Unbelievable that he has just walked away from £36m over the next 2 years!

Just shows that kids born into rich families don't have to work for anything.

Interesting decision, but if he feels its taking too much away from his family life then it's the right one.

Got to respect a man that walks away right at the top, from one of the best cars in F1 history and a huge salary just to focus on his wife and daughter.

Although I suspect with all racers, he won't be able to stay away for long.

Yeah I'd like to walk away from my job too, but someone's go to pay the mortgage & bills
