What could be so dumb about looking for another driver when 80% of the field have already contacted Mercedes to offer their services. Really what is dumb about that?
They still have a 3x WDC champion in Lewis who is far popular than Rosberg so they have their bases covered, again what is dumb about that?
If Rosberg won the title faily and honestly and now wants to honestly retire and be with his family, I see no reason why there should be feelings of dumbness, inconvenienced yes, but dumb no!
The only reason why they are left looking dumb is they know they fabricated Rosberg's title, thinking they were smart and getting away with it while Britney had other ideas and dumped them, ouch!

If he's the driver all the british fans and press seem to think he is, then he'll have no problem winning next year in the best car on the grid with a partner who is unfamiliar with the car.

Yes and thats what the whole debate is about losing the title this year was taken from Hamilton due to luck not his own doing. If you dont think he was gonna win the race in malaysia before his engine blew or wasnt gonna score any points in the other races (would have had 2nd places at very least) then you are being stubborn or biased in your views.
I take nothing away from Rosberg he did what he had to do and no-one is undeserving of a WDC. But you cannot say that failures or bad luck rather than ability didnt cost Hamilton another WDC this year.
Also there is no certainty that Merc will be the no1 car. With every race the Bulls have been closing the gap and the rule changes are more likely to play into their hands a little more again.

Yes he was guaranteed those points as when his car has had no issues he was 1st or 2nd.
All drivers benefit from misfortune, for example Rosberg is a world champion because of misfortune to his team mate.
No one is whining, just you to be honest. Motorsport fans are discussing issues afflicting motorsport.
You can be the greatest driver on the planet but if your car breaks down you are screwed.
Think the world acknowledges Hamilton is the best driver out there at the moment. Not just Brits or the British press.
The British press criticise him constantly so I'm a bit puzzled by your statement.
