MS Dhoni gives up ODI & T20 captaincy!

In my view, it will be tough for England to deal with Kohli's aggressive & brave captain ship in upcoming ODI series. I'm sure they would have preferred Dhoni's timid leadership along with his wrong selections..

A great player and person (despite my sometimes over the top critisicm of him) - absolute legend of Indian limited over cricket. His achievements shouldn't be forgotten: the number of times his captaincy and batting has pulled us through tough games is remarkable.

However the best thing about him is how he has remained dignified and humble throughout his career. MS Dhoni

I really don't understand why you think Kohli is aggressive and brave. Negative field placings, ridiculous decisions to continue batting. He got away with it though because Cook is just as negative and England were crap.

Regarding Dhoni. I'm a big fan. I'm not sure why so many Indian supporters criticise him for what he has done for you?

He took Indian cricket through the dark ages to be a leading contender in world one day cricket. His wins speak for themselves as does his ability to heavily influence big games.

He's humble and likeable, something your new captain needs to learn.

Serial, aggressive captaincy isn't just about your field placings - its a lot more than that. Kohli is always in your face while batting or fielding. Dhoni would often let games drift middle overs in Test cricket whereas Kohli is up, jumping, screaming and shouting at fielders to try and make something happen when he senses a drop in energy. He also tries something different such as giving Umesh the ball last test with only a handful of overs to go in the day on a turning pitch trying to get a wicket whereas most would have kept Jadeja and Ashwin on.

Dhoni's place in Indian cricket is assured though - World cup winner, T20 world cup winner, countless IPL titles and a Champions Trophy speak for themselves. No doubt it's not just his batting or glovework which have helped the side over the years but also the honest and humble nature by which he has led the side. A very difficult act to follow and a stalwart of Indian Cricket.

An excellent article by Menon which sums up why India will forever be in debt to one of it's greatest ever captains

Excellent captain, great finisher and remained calm under pressure, which I do feel is a quality which a captain does need. Had many achievements and led India through some tough times. Was it too late...maybe, but I dident see a ready made replacement waiting in the wings.

Which brings me onto Kohli, does he have the right temperament to lead India? Its good to be aggressive and get in the opponents face as player, but as a captain?

I played for 1 captain who had this sort of personality, and when we were down he caused panic and made players nervous.

Agree with what you're saying there Lefty. It's great when your team is full of confidence and smashing everyone on your home patch.

That attitude will need a rethink when India are up against it and short of confidence. Is Kohli the type of player to behave like that when he personally is in a rut? Time will obviously tell.

But you look at the success Ricky Ponting had as a skipper, albeit he was leading a team full of great cricketers he had that aggressiveness which opposing fans did not like about him

Good point, but that team was rarely under pressure, and dominated world cricket, I mean, we are talking about one of the greatest teams to grace the game. Players like Ponting and Kohli would thrive under these conditions.

The current India side are nowhere near this level, and no team since has come close.

I really do hope I'm wrong and Kohli turns out to be a great captain. His aggressiveness will pull the team up by the scruff of the neck in bad times, and keep them grounded in good.

It can go 2 ways, and the signs of a good captain is their temperament during bad times, and how they react in defeat.

I do feel Kohli needs to reign in that aggression a tad, and I am not sure how this will effect his own game.

As an Englishman I hate to admit but I am a Ponting fan. Class batsman, played hard on the field but didn't take himself too seriously and was very humble in defeat.

He did have an awesome side though and he wasn't the type of guy to chastise his own players.

Like is said, we will see how things are for Kohlibwhen you start losing.

We'll be absolutely fine - Kohli's "aggression" is overplayed by a mile. He winds up the opposition at times and gets under their skin but his talent is unquestionable. The transition to test cricket has been seamless and I have no doubt it will be similar in the shorter formats too. Also gives Kohli a good chance at stamping his team in early for 2019. Ironically similar questions were asked of Ganguly when he took over and he didn't do too bad.

That's true, be a test for him when the team starts to lose a few series, which will inevitably happen

I think Dhoni should have stayed as captain until after the Champions trophy.

Folks,

I understand about Dhoni's contributions to Indian cricket. All I meant was for last few years he wasn't the same player nor that amazing captain as he became too defensive or predictable. We lost games where we should have won easily in shorter formats..

I'm glad that he is available as a player & hope he gets his old mojo back in batting..

Greatest Indian captain but his time had come.

Of-course Don! May be it was little earlier but it's fine that he has moved on..

IMO good decision from Dhoni, time for Kohli to step up in all formats, Dhoni's place is safe for now, but he will need runs with the likes of Samson, Ojha etc waiting in the wings

Yup CF.. It's high time for Dhoni to step up otherwise he should give chance to youngsters waiting in the wings..
