Why are people so angry and violent today?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Good question. Is it worse than it ever was, or is it just much more reported?

Our views and perceptions of 'reality' are shaped by whatever informs them. Traditionally TV, radio, print press, but increasingly internet - probably already no.1 source in certain places or age groups.

The difference between internet and the media we had before is that the internet is infinitely more interactive than any of the others have ever been; our interactions are much more 'social', a society that's complete with its family, friends, acquaintances and enemies.

Could the internet be estranging people from the real world, largely replacing face-to-face social interactions and creating a false reality of what it's really like 'out there', to the point that for some people 'out there' merely becomes an 2.0 VR expansion of what goes on inside the web?

I'd be interested to know what studies have been conducted into the matter.

Has there ever been a time in history when people weren't violent and angry? Will there be a time in history when people aren't violent and angry?

Fair point.

I do think there's been a change with regard to when I was young, and that's that the violence seems to have become much more exhibitionist.

Trump before election:

"Climate change is a hoax engineered by the Chinese!"
"NATO is obsolete!"
"Clinton will face charges!"
"China manipulates currency exchange rates!"
"Clinton will go to war with Russia!"
"We will repeal Obamacare!"
"We will drain the swamp!"

Trump since inauguration:

"Climate change is real!"
"NATO is not obsolete!"
"Clinton was a worthy candidate!"
"China does not manipulate exchange rates!"
Escalates tensions with Russia, bringing relations to a post-Cold War low, fails to even amend Obamacare, and appoints a cabal of multimillionaire Wall Street and media execs to his cabinet.

Literally everyone should have seen this coming. 'Murica, you was duped well and proper.

Trump finding out the hard way the differences between being a regular citizen and being a politician. Saying things is easy, getting them done is another story.

Aren't you happy as Trump is doing what you wanted?

posted on 13/4/17

He isn't doing what I'd like him to be doing, no.

I'm pleased that much of what he said has turned out to be bluster/lies, even if that does further disenfranchise a good number of Americans who voted for him because they already felt like politicians had been ignoring them for decades.

And I'm pleased that he failed to repeal Obamacare, because it would have left millions without any sort of healthcare provision.

Am I pleased about his cabinet, the flagrant nepotism, the conflicts of interest, reversing the Clean Power Plan, rolling back waterway protection measures, his attempted immigration bans, his budget slashing, his words on and actions in the Middle East, and the way his administration is dealing with Russia? Not really.

Dave

Firstly,

I was lucky enough to see the GBR about fifteen years ago. I couldn't believe the colours and how rich and diverse life there was, and it was hard to grasp the scale of the thing. It was an incredible experience.

I was talking to a couple of divers from the Netherlands last weekend about - believe it or not - hermaphroditic nudibranchs! They have seen a large population disappear off their North Sea coastline as the animals appear to be developing only one set of reproductive organs (I cannot remember which now!) due they believe to a pollutant related to a new boat paint that's been found in the water.

There's only so long we can keep trashing the planet at an increasing rate before humans really start to feel (not just see - we do that already) the effects of continental environmental disasters. Whether it's colony collapse disorder leading to crop failures, freshwater shortages, desertification, massive water pollution or some other disaster, it's coming if we don't see some serious policy changes and cross-border efforts to combat climate change and environmental abuse now.

On colony collapse disorder, I read the other day that honey bees are responsible for pollinating $300bn worth of crops worldwide per annum. Consider how many people crops with that value are responsible for feeding.

Typical winter losses of the Western Honey Bee were 15% to 25%. In recent years in the US they have seen winter losses as high as 50%.

Couple those two facts and to a layman like me (having read the reports of very concerned experts), that's a massive disaster waiting to happen.

Shocking state of affairs. It's almost as if there needs to be a worldwide catastrophe to take the human population right down in order to stop the pillage of the environment to support our overpopulation. It will just remain the same, population expanding unchecked, and the rape of the environment will continue.

When you have utter morons like trump in charge of countries, then it's not going to get any better.

I just don't get the mindset of it.
Are they not living on this planet as well?
To deny it is baffling, but to disregard it anyway is downright poisonous and everyone is culpable if we don't stop this madness.
Ok so let's say we are NOT killing the world and its natural
Even if that were the case it reminds me of the quote...

What if we make the world a better place for no reason?

It's excellent I won't spoil incase you catch up but it's a little what you were alluding to
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Would it be a war, or manufactured disease/population sterilisation? Cause that's unfortunately all that would work.

It's either a frightening pleasure or a wonderful nightmare reading your posts on this - I'm not sure which, but I think you'll get the point.

We get a lot of sea cucumbers washed up on the beaches west of here. They don't look nearly as attractive out of the water as they do in, and having eaten one in my (closing in on forty years of) life, I can safely say that one is enough for a lifetime. Nonetheless, I maintain that nudibranchs are indeed cool, mainly down to their downright weirdness.

Very random question: When you were at Townsville, you didn't meet an Irish biology PhD student called Pat (cannot for the life of me remember his surname now, but I'll look it up!) from Cork did you?
