A Republican President pushing for any gun control is a surprise. I expect it will be down to individual states rather than the federal govt to take things further though, increase the checks on individuals ability to get a gun permit.

Whomever gets increased restrictions doesn't matter. I'm just happy to see there's talk from the Republicans who are traditionally staunch defenders of the NRA

Bump action gun convertion is not the type of convection we need......little steps๐Ÿ™

Trump is not as pro-gun lobby as suggested, and if he starts to have the conversation on more security and mental health checkson gun buyers, and less modified automatic weapons, Good!

What's the fascination with guns in US? I always find this odd, like why do so many Americans want to have high powered guns?

Bit mad really

If I lived in the States, I'd have a gun.

I had an air rifle as a lad and had a go with a farmers .22 rifle and shotgun when I was a scout, great fun.
I see the attraction to but not the logic for, military grade weapons, who goes hunting Bambi with a machine gun?

I'd also expect it to be harder to get a gun than to get a credit card.

I get the idea of guns as a pastime, but like leave your gun at a range, you can shoot it whenever you like, leave it safe there and go home.

I also understand hunting (not a fan of it myself) but it's a long treasured past time, so I can see why a hunting enthuisiast would own a rifle.

Even protecting your home, OK cool you can have a gun in your house, why the need to take it outside if it's to protect your family and home?

And what really annoys me is how gun lovers traet the 2nd ammendment like Creationists treat the bible, taking it at it's literal word and no conecpt of context or time when it was written.

Oh and the idea that making guns illegal would be the same as drugs being made illegal but people still do drugs, I'm fairly sure it's easier fro some 16 year old kid with no mates to go to a corner and buy some drugs, then it would be for the same kid to get an illegal gun.

The problem (as I see it) is that ‘gun culture’ is embedded into the fabric of the US.

It's a multi billion dollar industry:

The NRA have too many congress members under their control. Until this changes, (not sure how possible in the short term) I can’t see any meaningful, and just as importantly *lasting* measures being put in place to curb gun violence.

I mean the pro gun side are saying the way to stop school shootings is to arm teachers, have more armed guards at schools, do more shooter drills etc. WTF!

I always though home school sounded weird but in America today why not!

Another thing

The debate seems to be ban guns or it's mental health issues.

Crazy idea but why not look at both? Can't hurt.

Rodney Agree with you mate, if any form of gun control stopped even one school shooting it's been worth it.

I still today get a bit of a shock when I see armed police, as the Garda here in Ireland are not armed (except for specific divisions) you rarley see a gun.

I also saw a table that shows the number of gun deaths per 100k population, and Ireland are actually quite high on the list, but the thing is 90% of gun murders here are related to gang land fueds and it's them killing each other in the main.
